BROUGHTY ATHLETIC v MONTROSE ROSELEA

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT MAY 16TH 2015

With most Montrose football attention firmly fixed on Links Park Montrose, Roselea travelled to Whitton Park to face a Broughty side on a good run of form having won their last five matches and with intentions of making the play off spot.

Roselea were without the suspended Calum Watson, the injured Scott McDowell, Michael Cruickshank was working and Kyle Findlater was on holiday. James Collier failed a pre match fitness test although he took a place on the bench and Liam Bailey returned as a trialist.

After a nice morning a terrible gale got up and although the rain threatened it did not come to anything as the game progressed.

Roselea: Mcleod, Reoch, R Taylor, Thomson, Whyte, Mitchell, Anderson, Rae, Reid, Campbell & Greig. Subs: Smith, Bailey, Collier, Brand & Kerrigan.

After a bright home side opening spell it was Roselea who had the first shot on goal when Campbell drifted past his marker before cutting inside and hitting a low right footer which Ross held easily in 8 minutes.

In 10 minutes a long Broughty clearance almost caught Roselea napping at the back but Mcleod was quick to gather from Sibanda who had threatened to break clear.

With 12 minutes gone Jamie Winter unleashed his first pile driver of the day picking up a loose ball and the wind pushed the ball onto the outside of the post as it flashed behind.

The Fed took the lead in 15 minutes. A long throw was assisted with the wind and despite winning the challenge the ball fell nicely to LUNAN with four Roselea players in close attendance unable to anything and the defender poked the ball into the corner of the net.

Roselea had a great chance to level in 20 minutes when a flick on sent Greig clear on the right and although his chipped effort was a perfect height to beat Ross it was agonisingly wide of the post. Roselea were coming more into things and a couple of minutes later a well worked move involving Rae, Reid and Mitchell saw the latter send the low cross into the front post and Greig just failed to make the correct connection.

Both sides created some half chances but most were shots from outside the box which were not hit with any venom then right on half time Craig Anderson bucked that trend when he hit a great shot from 25 yards which whistled past the post.

Half Time: Broughty Athletic 1 Montrose Roselea 0

The second half started in controversial circumstances in the opening minute when Broughty were awarded a very baffling penalty kick. Mcleod palmed a cross away from the body of Duell and there was no contact between the players but the referee pointed to the spot. After booking Mcleod for his protest Bryan DUELL slotted the penalty into the net confidently.

In 51 minutes quick thinking from Anderson set Mitchell down the wing with a quickly taken free kick and his cross was narrowly missed by the onrushing Greig.

Winter broke to the other end and just as he was about to shoot a great tackle from Whyte prevented a shot on goal.

The game was far from dirty and several yellow cards were produced for niggly fouls after the ball had gone. Ryan Taylor became the games 6th booking in the 68th minute and McLellan took the free kick which Mcleod had to smother at the feet of the incoming forwards.

In 72 minutes Roselea replaced one Liam with another as Bailey replaced Campbell.

In 74 minutes Reid picked up a pass from Anderson just inside the Broughty half and took off on a run drifting past two defenders before being felled on the edge of the area. Mylles was booked and Ryan Taylors low shot was on target but did not have enough punch to trouble Ross.

Roselea made a second change with Morgan Smith going on for Steven Greig in 83 minutes.

Broughty had the last two chances of the game with a great reverse pass setting up Timmons but Mcleod made a great save with his leg. Right on time Jamie Clarke should have done better when his downward header at the far post should have at least been on target with Mcleod stranded.

Full Time: Broughty Athletic 2 Montrose Roselea 0

This win keeps Broughty in the hunt for the play off place with St Andrews securing promotion. Roselea remain in 9th place and with Bathgate losing, Roselea are now assured as expected to remain in the Premier League for season 2015-16. Lochee Utd have been relegated from the Superleague and will be also be in the Premier League next season.

There was no doubting that Broughty overall deserved to win the match but the soft penalty award so early into the second half made their passage easier. There were some outstanding displays in the Roselea side but they did lack a cutting edge to trouble the confident Fed side.

Roselea await to play Edinburgh Utd away in their last game but with the Lothian side having five games to play there is no guessing when this will be played. It will not be Saturday 23rd May as Roselea have been allocated a free week.
