GA EXIT FROM DOWNFIELD

Montrose Roselea 2-3 Downfield

Roselea crashed out of the GA Engineering cup after surrendering a two goal lead against their fellow Tayside opponents.

Campbell was brought back into the starting eleven and within 2 minutes delivered a superb cross which just evaded Collier at the back post.

Roselea were causing problems down the left and Taylor whipped in a cross which found Greig, but his header was comfortably saved by the Downfield keeper.

Roselea took the lead after 12 minutes. McDowell collected the ball at the half way line before surging forward and playing a superbly weighted ball into COLLIER. The big striker took a touch before dinking the ball over the keeper and into net.

Downfield had their first attacking moment of note after 19 minutes when Martin headed towards goal but McLeod made a solid save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Collier was enjoying finding space behind their back line and nearly got his second after 24 minutes. He chased down a through ball and Downfields keeper was caught in no man's land. Collier tried to chip him but a defender was able to head away the danger.

Whyte and Thomson were showing they could be a strong centre half partnership as Thomson dealt with numerous long balls played up by the Downfield defence. Whyte bravely threw his head in the way of a shot that was heading towards goal by Timmons.

Dalgarno floated in a free kick from afar which Collier knocked down for Tringham, but the latter's right footed volley sailed over the bar.

After 42 minutes Roselea doubled their lead through Collier again. Campbell played the ball down the left wing, COLLIER bent his run well to beat the offside trap and showed great composure to round the keeper and stroke the ball home.

Downfield were to score a vital goal just before half time when a Clark shot took a fortunate deflection to RIGDEN who made no mistake with the finish.

Half Time

Down field equalised after 50 minutes. Campbell conceded a free kick 5 yards outside the box. SMALL found a gap in the wall and drilled a low shot which found the target.

Roselea made three changes midway through the second half as S.Smith, Sturrock and M.Smith replaced Campbell, Greig and Tringham.

Sturrock had a strike after 83 minutes from far out well saved.

With 2 minutes remaining Mcartney raced through on goal but McLeod pulled off a brilliant save to keep things level.

Just as penalties loomed, Roselea were dealt the killer blow. Whyte was adjudged to have fouled Clark in the box. TIMMONS stepped up from 12 yards out and made no mistake to send the away team through to the next round.

A cruel blow for Roselea as they exit their second cup competition of the season. Despite being two goals down Downfield never gave up and were probably just about worthy of winning the match after a poor second half showing from Roselea.

Back to league action next week as Roselea travel down to play Edinburgh United.
