MONTROSE ROSELEA v BONESS UTD

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 1st ROUND

SAT SEPT 11 2010

Roselea faced a stiff test with Super League Title Holders Boness Utd on cup duty at Broomfield Park. The sides met in season 2009/10 with the visitors leaving with a victory in a Scottish Cup tie by 3-2.  After a dry spell the overnight rain saw that the pitch was in excellent condition and the match started in very calm weather.

Roselea: Mcleod, Mustard, Whyte, Graham, David Craig, Reoach, Rae, Kennedy, Reid, Watson & Hood. Subs: Brand, Doug Craig, Riach, Miller, Barclay, Strachan, Urquhart.

Roselea took the lead against Boness in the first minute in 2009 but the roles were reversed when Boness took the lead in the third minute. Snowden was allowed too much time on the ball after Reid had lost possession and his cross was finally turned home by SHIRRA after a scramble in the box.

In 13 minutes the slick passing Boness side looked to be on easy street when they doubled their advantage. Snowden picked the ball up on the right hand side again after Roselea lost possession through Craig and another great cross was flicked home by LOVE.

Roselea were struggling to get near the Boness players and eventually the ball broke to Hamilton who had a speculative shot from 25 yards go just over on 16 minutes.

In 24 minutes Roselea had their first real chance when Hood did well to set Kennedy for a cross and Watson headed just over whilst receiving a head knock at the same time. Fraser had a pot shot for Boness a minute later and Mcleod had to scramble his second save off the line after the rasping first effort deceived him in the wind. Calum Rae had a great run for Roselea and beat three players before laying to Watson who struck from 25 yards but Ewing in the visitor’s goals was not troubled by it.

Boness Utd broke again in 41 minutes with Shirra and Fraser passing their way through the Roselea midfield again. This time McFadyen went just wide with a shot.

Half Time: Roselea 0 Boness Utd 2

Boness kicked off the second half with an ever-strengthening wind behind as Roselea looked to pull something out of the hat to give them a much needed life-line in the game. Boness were the first to attack as they continued where they had left off in the first half. Ewan Graham had to be alert to clear at the far post and McLeod held the resulting corner well.

Roselea then had a great chance to draw first blood in the second half in 55 minutes. Kennedy played the ball into the chest of Watson who found Hood and his shot was well saved by Ewing’s feet before the ball was scrambled away. Hood required treatment before resuming play.

Roselea were looking more of a threat despite Boness continued dominance in midfield and they finally got the break in 59 minutes with a goal. Watson broke free with Boness claiming for a foul, he sent in an early curling shot which Ewan beat out to Hood and again he saved the rebound before the ball broke to WATSON who followed up to score from close range.

Boness looked rattled and a minute later Watson flicked on and Whyte struck a great volley which Ewing had to turn round for a corner. Jordan Reoch almost got his head to the corner and Boness cleared.

In 64 minutes Reoch was booked when it appeared that McFadyen looked as if he had gone over the ball. Fleming sent in a dangerous swerving free kick and Roselea’s defence had to block two shots before the danger was cleared.

Miller, Riach and Barclay replaced Craig, Watson and Reid at various points in the second half.

Fraser of Boness received his marching orders in 76 minutes for an off the ball incident.

Roselea did seem to have the upperhand on their visitors for the rest of the match as they looked slightly rattled but the Lothians side had too much left in the bag to surrender lightly and held out for the win.

Final Score: Roselea 1 Boness Utd 2

After a very slow start against a very classy Boness side Roselea finally dragged themselves back into the game. The midfield duo of Shirra and Fraser ran the show for the visitors and made it difficult for the home team to get any pattern to their play.Credit to the Roselea team for not backing down and they gave the Super League holders a few scares in the second half.

Man of the Match was Lee Hood who was chosen by the Sponsors MGFA and Gordon Allan.

Roselea now head back to League action with a trip back to Ogilvy Park on Sat Sept 18th where the teams drew 2-2 in the League Cup section matches. Roselea will want to keep their 100% record up but will face an ever improving Vics side. The match kicks off at 2.30pm

Roselea have the following home games available for Match Hospitality: Coupar Angus (Sept 25th), Forfar Albion (Oct 2nd) and Luncarty (Oct 16th). Please contact Roy Gill on 07908 763219
