ARBROATH SPORTING CLUB v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST REGION NORTH DIVISION

SAT MAY 21st 2011

Roselea travelled to Seaton Park Arbroath to play ASC in what was sadly the home sides last ever game in Junior Football. Following Angus Council’s decision to hike their rent up from £900 to £11,000 the Clubs Committee decided against looking for a new location after their 25 year lease ended this year. The club was formed in 1961 and have been Junior since 1973.

Roselea were looking for a win to finish 3rd in the League whilst the home side were looking to try and end on a high as well as trying to finish above their neighbours Arbroath Vics.

Roselea had Calum Rae missing with his ankle injury and Paul Whyte made a welcome return from injury.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, Mustard, Fotheringham, Reoch, Kennedy, Urquhart, David Craig, Aitken, Riach & Hood. Subs: Watson, Colier, Whyte, Strachan & Brand.

Roselea had the first chance in 4 minutes when Riach sent Urquhart away down the left hand side however he couldn’t square to the advancing Aitken and the chance was gone. Roselea almost took the lead in 7 minutes when Urquhart flicked a Kennedy cross on with his head and Logie in the home goal stuck a hand out in hope and managed to turn the ball behind for a corner.

ASC took the lead in 21 minutes against the run of play. Scrimgeor played a ball over the top and after it initially looked like it would be carried out of play by the wind it held up and SNOWDEN unleashed a great volley into the corner of the net. A minute later McVicar broke down the right hand side for the home side and Mcleod had to dive low to cut the cross out.

Roselea had a couple of chances in 24 minutes. First an Urquhart ball found Hood but it would not sit for him and Brown blocked for a corner. From the Kennedy corner, Riach went close with a left footed shot.

ASC had another chance on 26 minutes when the ball fell to Scrimgeour and although the ball went over it was a well hit left footed shot.

ASC thought they had doubled their lead in 32 minutes when Brown headed home a dangerous free kick however referee Bowman gave offside and Brown picked up a yellow card and injury for his trouble.

Fotheringham had a good volley go just over for Roselea 8 minutes before the interval. As the half drew to a close Roselea had a major claim for a penalty when an ASC defender appeared to handle in the box.

Half Time: ASC 1 Roselea 0

ASC started the second half looking hungrier than their visitors and Snowden brought out a great save from Mcleod when he palmed a volley over the bar.

It was Roselea’s turn to bring out the best of the goalkeepers when Urquharts excellent volley was somehow turned behind by Logie when it looked in all the way.

Roselea were coming more into the game and in 60 minutes Mustard had a great chance to equalise when he just failed to get enough of his head to a Colquhoun free kick.

Watson came on for Urqhart and almost made an instant impact when his great cross found no takers in the box. He was then given harshly offside when he found himself in a great position.

Paul Whyte replaced Fotheringham in 80 minutes and almost became the last player to score at Seaton Park but his header was just off target.

Roselea pressed hard for an equaliser and despite having a few near misses they could not claw back the goal.

Final Score: ASC 1 Montrose Roselea 0

Referee G Bowman

A disappointing end to Roselea’s season but perhaps a justified win for the home side considering the circumstances. The season has been a slight disappointment however with so many young players breaking through it bodes well for the future. Downfield ended up winning the League courtesy of Lochee Harp’s draw with North End and left Roselea 8 points back in 4th position. The club finished the season off with their end of season trophy presentation in the Golf Inn.
