BRECHIN VICS v MONTROSE ROSELEA

McBOOKIE.COM NORTH DIVISON

SAT MARCH 16th 2013

Roselea headed to Victoria Park Brechin to take on the Vics in what has been a happy hunting ground for them over the last few years. Roselea travelled minus the holidaying James Collier and also Graeme Allan who was released by mutal consent due to work commitments. David Beedie was missing with flu. Roselea’s Management team shuffled things up with Paul Taylor coming in at right back and Calum Rae taking up Beedie’s slot in midfield. Marcus Watt dropped to the bench with Danny Ross coming in on the right and Craig Anderson moving in field.

Victoria Park was looking in excellent condition at the start thanks to the work of the Brechin Groundsman but was likely to cut up in the soft conditions. An overnight frost had put some doubt on the game but was passed playable at 10.45.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Whyte, Reoch, Ross, Rae, Anderson, Cruickshank, Reid & Watson. Subs: Watt, Riach, Kennedy & Craig.

Roselea made a bright opening and it was no surprise that they took the lead in four minutes. Ross sent Watson away on the right flank and despite being tugged back he sent a low hard shot to the front post which Jamie could only parry into the path of CRUICKSHANK who followed up from close range.

Roselea were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area in 6 minutes. Goal scorer Cruickshank sent the ball up and over the Vics wall but Jamie was well placed to save.

Vics had their first sortie into the Roselea last third in 12 minute and as the ball was worked across the pitch Lewis Robertson hit a firm shot from 25 yards which Mcleod held well.

Roselea increased their lead in 14 minutes under controversial circumstances. Ryan Taylor miss hit a cross when the ball took a bobble and sent the ball high into the air, WATSON entitled to challenge did so and appeared to fouled the keeper who fumbled the ball into the net and a goal was given.

Roselea had another chance almost immediately when Taylor sent over an early ball and Reid sliding in got a slight touch but not enough to steer the ball on target. In 15 minutes Taylor took a free kick on the right hand side and his low curling ball deceived all and went just past the post.

Brechin Vics seemed to get some breathing space for the next spell of the game but could still not break Roselea down.

It was the visitors who scored next in 34 minutes when Danny ROSS followed a Reid blocked effort and finished well from 16 yards with his left foot sending the ball high into the corner of the net.

Anderson went on a strong run in the Vics box on 40 minutes and drew Gourlay who had just been booked and was afraid to commit to a tackle however Jamie saved well at the near post.

Roselea were awarded a penalty just before half time which once again aggrieved the home side. Cairney tackled Reid on the penalty spot and appeared to bring him down after winning the ball. REID stepped up and took the kick and smashed home to make it 4-0.

Half Time; Brechin Vics 0 Montrose Roselea 4

Roselea opened the second half strongly and were awarded a free kick when Gourlay brought Reid down on the edge of the box. Anderson took the kick but sent the ball over the bar.

Roselea increased their lead to six with two goals from Calum WATSON on 52 & 54 minutes. First one came when Reid flicked a header on to Watson to calmly roll the ball in from 8 yards then Cruickshank got to the bye line and crossed to make it easy for Watson to head home his third.

Roselea made a double change in 55 minutes with the two Calum’s Watson & Rae being replaced by Watt & Riach.

Michael Cruickshank was unlucky not to make it seven in 61 minutes when he picked the ball up 35 yards out and went on a run with just the finish missing as he curled his shot round the post.

Roselea made their last change in 65 when Kennedy replaced Ross.

Anderson also had a great chance to make it seven when he showed great stamina to perfectly knee the ball at the halfway line with his momentum taking him clear however when he bore down on the Vics goal he shot tamely wide.

Roselea were dominating the game and the chances came thick and fast as Riach, Anderson and Cruickshank squandered great chances within minutes of each other.

Brechin Vics then had another spell of pressure and Buggins should have scored when he hit the post from a corner from 3 yards out.

Ryan Taylor looked to have been seriously injured in 82 minutes as he challenged a loose Anderson pass. Fyfe of Vics saw a straight red for the tackle and although Taylor played no further part the injury was not as bad as first feared. Reoch picked up a booking for his part in the “aftermath”.

Anderson once again outstripped the Vics defence and cut back to Reid however the pass was too strong and the ball went high and was tipped over by Robbie for a corner in 88 minutes as the game drew to a close.

Full Time: Brechin Vics 0 Montrose Roselea 6

From the off Roselea showed they meant business in what was one of their best performances of the season. Despite the two decisions which went their way helping matters the 3 points were always heading back along the A935. The only disappointment was the poor finishing the 2nd half which could easily have seen a far higher scoreline. The win and the fact that Kirrie Thistle and Blairgowrie drawing 1-1 along with North End being idle meant that they gained ground in the League.

This Saturday Roselea face a tougher game with co promotion chasers Arbroath Vics visiting Broomfield Park for a North Division League match. Roselea sit three points the visitors with a game in hand. With eight games remaining it is still all to play for and will be one of the tightest finishes in years.

Roselea are on the look out for Committee Volunteers from all walks of life who want to give up a couple of hours per week to help the ambitious club. There are various roles available, which will be rewarding for those with or without a football background.
