MONTROSE ROSELEA vs BANCHORY ST TERNAN OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP 2ND ROUND 06/11/2004 Roselea were at home to Banchory St Ternan in the 2nd Round of the OVD Junior Cup last Saturday. Banchory are in the North First Division and currently hold a mid table position. Roselea almost kept the same starting line up which drew with North End in the League Cup. The only personnel change was John Wands taking over between the posts due to Ross Mcleod being ineligible due a clause in his loan deal from Carnoustie. On the injury front Paul Masson, Graham Walger, Hayden Smith and Michael Ross may still be out for a few weeks yet. James McKellar was working offshore. Roselea lined up in a 4-4-2 formation: John Wands, Matt Miller, Paul Whyte Paul Ross, Chris Masson, Martin Christie, Eric Watson, David Craig and Scott Findlater, Colin Page and Duncan Croall. The bench consisted of Kevin Crawford, Kevin Smith, Dean Milne, Lee Walker and Luke Myers. Strangely, for the third week running, Broomfield was unusually calm. Banchory were first to threaten when a free kick was deflected over the bar by their centre forward in 5 minutes. Roselea took the lead against the run of play in 15 minutes. A poor cross field pass was intercepted by Scott Findlater who went on a run down the left hand side and his perfect cross found Eric Watson at the far post and his diving header found the net. Findlater was causing Banchory all sorts of problems and another left sided cross just failed to meet the head of Duncan Croall. Banchory were having the upper hand in possession terms but seemed to lack any real cutting edge in front of goal and their best efforts were from longer range with Wands having to turn a couple round for corners. Half Time Roselea 1 Banchory 0 Roselea started the second half in more determined fashion and extended their lead in 60 minutes. A Colin Page corner was bulleted into the net by Paul Whyte in what can only be described as “the type that keepers just don’t save”. Five minutes later it was 3-0. Set piece expert Colin Page was again the orchestrator with a typical delivery from the corner the only difference to number two was the fact that it was Eric Watson who scored. In 70 minutes Kevin Crawford replaced Duncan Croall with Eric Watson moving upfield. In 72 minutes Banchory got a goal back from the penalty spot after Masson was adjudged to have pushed in the box. Banchory’s number 10 made no mistake from the spot. Lee Walker replaced Matt Miller and Kevin Smith went on for the hard working Martin Christie. John Wands then came to Rosleas rescue with three important saves in the last 5 minutes, one save being of the finest class. Eric Watson should have made it four for Roselea in the last minute when he found himself through on the keeper. His pifolous effort went wide to Kevin Crawford and he attempted an overhead kick which never really came off. Roselea 3 Banchory 1 Roselea will be happy to be through to the next round, which will be drawn on November 14th. The score line probably flattered but Banchory never really threatened despite being a very attractive footballing side. Hopefully this was the best day for some players to have an off day and put it behind them. John Wands capped an excellent performance with a string of saves near the end of the match and has staked his claim for the number one shirt in the coming weeks. Match Sponsors were J Lammond. John Wands picked up the Man of the Match award. Roselea travel to Broughty Athletic next week in their final DJ Laing Cup match. Although qualification is almost out of the window they will still want to keep their long unbeaten run going. Kick Off is at 2.00pm League Result: Scone 1 North End 1.
