LOCHEE HARP v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 1st ROUND

SAT Sept 17th 2011

Roselea fresh from their free week and Ryder Cup festivities travelled to Beechwood Park, Lochee to face the local Harp. Over the years Roselea have had their fair success over the home team on League business however when it came to Cup games Harp have had the upper hand.

Roselea travelled with almost a full pool following the holiday period and a few changes were also thrown in to the equation as the Management team picked their eleven and seven subs.

Roselea: Mcleod, Colquhoun, R Taylor, Rae, Riach, Mustard, Urquhart, Anderson, P Taylor, Fletcher, Kennedy. Subs: Collier, Riach’ Whyte’ Aitken, Strachan, Rodger & Doug Craig.

On a decent surface which was flat and moist from the overnight rain Harp were first to threaten. A well worked corner saw the ball played to the edge of the box but Mcleod saved well from Taylor for the home side.

Roselea take the lead in 8 minutes having come back well to Harps opening. Ryan Taylor fed Kennedy who put in a cross finding FLETCHER in plenty of space inside the box and after dummying the keeper he slotted home from six yards.

Roselea were looking hungry and almost added to their lead in 9 and 10 minutes. Firstly a great diagonal ball from Mustard found Colquhoun flying down the right and his cross was almost prodded home by Paul Taylor the when the ball came in Urquhart had a speculative overhead kick go just over.

As good as Roselea were playing Harp were not sitting down and had their own spells of pressure and Mcleod had to hold two headers, one from a corner and one from a flighted free kick just after.

Roselea were on the attack again and another danger cross from Taylor in 12 minutes so Urquhart and the home keeper Hill almost go eye to eye with neither taking the forward role and the ball went behind.

In 15 minutes Harp broke and only a great block from the all involved Ryan Taylor saw Ramsays shot be deflected behind for a corner,

Roselea then break from deep with Anderson carrying the ball from deep inside his own half before finding Fletcher wide left, Anderson kept his run going and got his head to Fletchers cross however Hill was well positioned to find the diving header and saved well.

Things settle down and some of Roseleas passing is excellent however it is not until the 28th minute that they have a strike on goal. A ball falls to Paul Taylor 25 yards out and his 25 yard swerving shot almost deceived Hill in the home goal but he did well to turn it round for a corner.

Roselea lose possession from the corner and Harp break quickly to the other end, Mcleod is left with no option other than to handle outside the corner of the box and receives a yellow card. The free kick meets the head of Fotheringham and Taylors overhead effort is just wide of the Roselea goal.

Roselea’s next chance comes in 35 minutes however Kennedy cannot balance himself to get a shot in and plays the ball wide to Taylor before Harp clear for a corner.

Roselea were reduced to ten men in 38 minutes. Ross Colquhoun who had been booked two minutes earlier for an off the ball argument then went on a mazy run and lunged at the ball leaving referee Jeff Banks no choice but to show a second yellow and send the Roselea player off.

Harp go close for an equaliser when Toveys shot is just deflected behind for a corner with Mcleod stranded.

Just as half time is coming Anderson almost gets his head to a Kennedy corner when the slightest touch would be a certain goal.

Half Time: Lochee Harp 0 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea made a change of personnel at half time with a reshuffle due to Colquhouns red card. Whyte comes on to replace Paul Taylor to give Roselea a more defence set up. Despite the apparent negative approach Roselea increased their lead in 46 minutes. RYAN TAYLOR burst through and hit an unstoppable 30-yard low shot beyond Hill to double the visitor’s lead.

Roselea were on a comfortable two-goal cushion despite the one-man disadvantage and Harp made this look vulnerable with a goal on 61 minutes. WILLIAMSON. Ramsay found himself in room at the edge of the box, Mcleod shut the ball down and saved well however the ball fell to the Harp veteran and he finished well from 20 yards.

WILLIAMSON was being a thorn in the Roselea side and in 59 minutes he equalised for Harp. He evaded three tackles in the box before shimmying another and despatched a great curling shot into the corner of the net to square the game.

Roselea made a change with Collier replacing Kennedy in 63 minutes.

In 75 minutes Harp had a good chance when Ramsay broke on Roselea’s left but again McLeod was swift out and blocked.

Anderson hit the bar for Roselea with a great strike from 25 yards, which caught the Harp defence on the back foot.

Ryan Taylor was still full of energy and on another long run he was brought down by Fotheringham however the yellow card was probably well accepted considering the fact that Taylor was away from the Harp defence.

With 8 minutes to go Aitken replaced Anderson for Roselea.

In 86 minutes Harp send in a very dangerous free kick from the man of the moment Williamson and Mcleod does well to hold the low ball at his near post.

Roselea win the tie with a deserved goal in the 94th minute. Callum Rae who had put in a great shift in midfield shut the ball down releasing Aitken who bore in on goal before unselfishly squaring to COLLIER in a better position and their team mates swamped them in celebration having won the tie.

Final Score: Lochee Harp 2 Montrose Roselea 3

A very satisfactory win for Roselea which will see them progress to the 2nd Round of a competition which they don’t normally do well in. Some great performances from Fletcher, Rae and Ryan Taylor were the difference that saw them through. This week sees the visit of near neighbours Brechin Vics in a League match that will see two teams at the lower end of the table going head to head. The match kicks of at 2.30pm at Broomfield Park. Roselea have arranged a friendly with Newburgh JFC on Sat Oct 1st with a 1pm KO, player travel details will follow shortly.
