ROSYTH JFC v MONTROSE ROSELEA
EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 1st ROUND

SAT SEPT 14th 2013

Roselea took a break from Premier League duty with a trip to Rosyth for an East of Scotland 1st Round Cup tie. On the back of their first league win against Violet the previous week there was confidence that they could progress against the Fife side who were lowly in the South District League. Roselea travelled with some personnel missing. Michael Cruickshank was unavailable due to work and Jordan Reoch was still struggling with his knee injury and sat out again with Stuart Richardson. Recent trialist Aaron Thomson had signed from Cowie Thistle and was also included in the squad and got the call to start with Paul Taylor feeling unwell after travelling. Scott Riach slotted in a right back with Thomson in the centre of defence. The sides last met on Premier League action in 2007-8 with Roselea recording a 4-0 win at home on the last day of the season with a 2-0 win at Rosyth being their first of that season in the league in November 2007.

Roselea: Mcleod, Thomson, R Taylor, Collier, Anderson, Fletcher, Rae, Duncan Reid, Dale Reid & Watson. Subs: Rausch, P Taylor, Gammie & Brand.

Roselea started strongly and had a tame penalty shout in only two minutes but should have possibly scored in four minutes. Watson dispossessed Livingstone at the edge of the box in a wide position and sent a great curling cross which Reid tried to volley when perhaps a header would have produced a better result.

Roysth suffered a blow in 5 minutes when Taylor had to leave the field after an accidental clash with Watson left his forehead dripping with blood and he was replaced by Strathearn.

Duncan Reid had a shot from 22 yards but was off target in 11 minutes when his namesake Dale held off a challenge.

Rosyth had their first sortie in 12 minutes when Gilfillan went on a run along the 18 yard box and when Thomson did not fully clear Johnstone had a shot which went wide.

Roselea then had a chance on 25 minutes when Watson collected a throw in, spun his defender and hit a low shot from 25 yards that Thrope in the home goal did well to turn round the post. Fletcher sent in a far post corner that Collier cleverly headed back across goal and Dale Reid almost connected at the other post.

Calum Rae was fortunate not to find himself in the referees book in 26 minutes when he took Taylor clean off his feet in the middle of the pitch. Things did boil over on the half hour mark and both sides had a player dismissed. Livingstone the Rosyth left back went in high with his knee on Rae and the Roselea man reacted angrily to the challenge. The referee was correct in showing both players to the changing rooms.

Roselea seemed to be the side affected by this and they went a goal behind two minutes later. A free kick was given away on the left hand side and when the waist high ball came in MACMILLAN found himself in space and flicked home.

Roselea had a half chance when Collier flicked a long Anderson thrown back to the edge of the box and Fletchers full volley went just wide of the post. Rosyth had a great chance in 39 minutes when Johnstone connected with a cross ball and his header hit the base of the post before being scrambled clear.

Half Time: Rosyth 1 Roselea 0

Roselea came out with their Managers words ringing in their ears and made a positive start. Riach played the ball wide to Fletcher and Watson just failed to connect with his brilliant curling cross at the far post.

Roselea got back on level terms in 55 minutes. Another Anderson long throw saw Collier and the keeper challenge and when the ball came to Fletcher he headed against the bar only to drop on the line but WATSON was sharpest to react and blasted home from very close range.

Rosyth had the move of the game with a series of passes up the Roselea left hand side before sub Strathearn swivelled and stabbed the ball agonisingly wide from 12 yards to the home teams anguish.

In 71 minutes it was Roselea’s turn to create and Anderson sent in a great ball after Reid had taken a short free kick to him, this time Watson failed to connect with the ball and it slipped behind for a bye kick. Watson went close again a minute later again just failing to connect with a Riach cross.

Stewart Fletcher had to leave the play in 74 minutes with a very obvious dislocated shoulder and had to be replaced by Gammie before heading to Hospital.

Both sides had great chances in similar fashion in 77 minutes. Watson was put through on the keeper who blocked with his legs then at the other end Johnstone looking offside found Mcleod in a similar mood not to concede and he saved well.

With penalties looming danger man Calum WATSON negated that need when he again found himself in on goal however this time the keeper could only deflect the ball up and over himself into the net via his legs.

Full Time: Rosyth 1 Montrose Roselea 2

Roselea were well within themselves to win this tie but also made it harder than the scoreline suggests. Rosyth’s goal was slightly against the run of play and certainly gave them a boost. Roselea dominated the second half with only the odd Rosyth break threatening however it took a late goal to settle things. With Stewart Fletchers injury and Calum Rae now suspended it is not looking great on the numbers front however they are hopeful Stuart Richardson & Jo Reoch will be back from injury and Michael Cruickshank will return.

Roselea now head to Fauldhouse Utd on Premier League duty this coming Saturday and it will be another tough test against one of the fancied sides. The match kicks off at 2.30pm and a bus will be running from the Golf Inn at 11am with club supporters welcome to travel. This will be a run of two matches in the League with Oakley Utd coming to Broomfield Park on Sat 28th with a 2pm Kick Off. Roselea will be offering their normal Hospitality packages for this and the upcoming games v Glenrothes (Oct 12th almost sold out) and Arniston Rangers on Oct 19th.

Tickets are also selling well for the Ladies Dinner which is on Saturday 26th October at the Links Hotel with Guest Speakers Isobel Rutter and Eric Davidson. Tickets priced at £35 a head can be purchased by contacting Roy Gill on 07908 763219 or email gill.fin@btinternet.com
