YOKER ATHLETIC v MONTROSE ROSELEA

Scottish Junior Cup 4th Round
Sat Jan 18th 2014

Roselea traveled to Holm Park, Clydebank, to face Carlos Silvas ex team Yoker Athletic in the 4th Round of the Scottish Junior Cup. After doubts about the game on Wednesday the home side reported an improvement in conditions later in the week and the match went ahead. The pitch had been worked on and although very wet it was playable.

As per is usual for Roselea at present they had several players missing for a variety of reasons and Manager Ralph Brand made a late selection on his starting line up. Out injured was Danny Ross with Craig Anderson sitting out for the last game of his three game suspension. Stuart Richardson and Stewart Fletcher were both working and missed out.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Whyte, Reoch, Rae, Collier, Silva, Cruickshank, Reid & Watson. Subs: Rausch, Riach, Gammie, Brand & Thomson.

Yoker kicked off with the wind at their backs and were first out of the blocks when Arbuckle broke away but Reoch managed to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Roselea then had a chance of their own when a Ryan Taylor free kick found Calum Watson who flicked the ball over the keeper but the ball was cleared off the line in 5 minutes.

Play was swinging from end in typical Scottish Cup tie fashion and Rae had a shot well saved by home keeper Winslow before Crerand had a shot which Ryan Taylor had to clear off the line.

Yoker had a good spell of pressure which Roselea defended well then Watson picked up a booking for a challenge which saw him win the ball fairly.

Ross Mcleod had to make a couple of saves from low shots but his positioning was perfect and held well.

In 25 minutes Paul Taylor sent a ball down the right hand side and Calum Watson made his way to the bye line before Winslow smothered his cut back at the near post.

In 42 minutes Roselea had a double claim for a foul and penalty. Watson was put through from a great Silva pass and appeared to be tugged back outside the box when the ball broke to Dale Reid he then appeared to be clattered as he went to shoot but both fell silent with the referee. Roselea had another chance just before the half time whistle when Taylor sent in another free kick and Whyte got his head to the ball but just couldn’t direct it on target.

Half Time: Yoker Athletic 0 Montrose Roselea 0

Roselea got off to the best possible start to the second half with a goal in 48 minutes with some sheer perseverance from Calum WATSON. Keeper Winslow was caught with the ball at his feet 30 yards out and the Roselea striker robbed him and finished well from a narrow angle to open the scoring.

Yoker threatened in 58 minutes when Vickers made his way to the bye line and his dangerous cross needed a touch from Reoch to take it away from the strikers waiting to pounce. Roselea broke away to the other end with Silva breaking on the left and his shot came off the upright before being turned behind for a corner.

It was Yoker who again raised the bar however some great defending from Roselea kept them ahead.

Watson then hit the side netting after a Collier flick on gave him a half chance. In 68 minutes Watson put Reid away on the right and he looked like he was going to hit the ball with power however he cleverly tried to chip Winslow and the big keeper managed to save at the top of his reach.

Roselea were defending like Trojans but they couldn’t stop Yoker getting back into the game in the 79th minute. The ball was moved from right to left by Vickers and MAITLAND cut in and drove an unstoppable drive into the net from 20 yards. This goal revitalised the home side and they went 2-1 up in 81 minutes. Reid lost the ball attacking and MCMONAGLE shot from 16 yards and although the ball came off Ryan Taylor on the way into the net it would have been goalbound in any case.

Roselea had a chance to equalise in 85 minutes when a Cruickshank cross was headed just wide by Watson at the back post. They did however equalise in 87 minutes after a great run from Dale REID saw him skip past the Yoker defence and hit a great shot from 25 yards past home keeper Winslow to send Roselea supporters into raptures.

There was a scare for Roselea a minute later when sub Crerand was again the danger and smacked a 25 yard shot off the cross bar.

In an amazing  finale to the game Roselea had a chance to win their passage into the next round when Cruickshank pressed the full back and then sent in a cross which fell to Calum Rae but his low shot was well blocked With thoughts of a replay looming Roselea cruelly went out with the winning goal coming some 5 minutes into stoppage time. The ball fell to MAITLAND 15 yards out and he hammered the ball home. Roselea took kick off and Reoch sent the ball long and out of the park only for the referee to call for full time.

Full Time: Yoker Athletic 3 Montrose Roselea

On a positive note it shows just how far Roselea have come when they travel to Glasgow for a 4th Round Scottish Cup tie and are bitterly disappointed that they have not only lost the chance of a replay but also had chances to win the game themselves. There were some great performances with hard work and discipline shown all over the pitch. It is another part of the learning curve for some of the younger players and will stand them in good stead for the future. Its now back to League business with the visit of Kirkcaldy in the McBookie.com Premier League to Broomfield Park. Kick off is at 1.45pm and Roselea will be looking to avenge the 3-2 defeat incurred in the reverse fixture in August when surrendering a 2-0 lead.
