CARNOUSTIE PANMURE v MONTROSE ROSELEA

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP 2ND ROUND

SAT FEB 15TH

Roselea travelled to Laing Park to face Superleague side Carnoustie Panmure in the 2nd Round of the East of Scotland Cup with a home tie against Blairgowrie waiting for the winners of the match.

Roselea travelled minus Stuart Richardson, Stewart Fletcher and Carlos Silva who were all unavailable due to work. Ryan Taylor despite being a midweek injury doubt was able to make the starting line up.

The sides last met in Feb 2012 with the home side edging Roselea out 2-1 so they would need to do better today to progress in the cup.

Roselea arrived to find the pitch in sterling condition considering the overnight battering it would have had from the rain however the referee had concerns with a 5 meter square area on the far side at the halfway line and only thanks to a massive effort from the home ground staff did the match get the green light to proceed.

Roselea: Mcleod, P Taylor, R Taylor, Reoch, Whyte, Anderson, Rae, Collier, Cruickshank, Watson & Reid. Subs: Ross, Riach, Thomson, Kerrigan & Brand

After a very even opening it was Roselea who had a great chance to take the lead when Reid broke clear and the ball took a bobble just as he it his shot and took it off target with 6 minutes on the clock.

It was Carnousties chance in the 11th minute when a Whyte slip allowed Milne to have a chance but his shot from the edge of the box was weak and Mcleod was not tested.

Carnoustie were having a bit more of the pressure with the slight slope on Laing Park and the breeze also at their backs. Whyte had to get a touch on cross to send it behind for a corner and when it came in Mylles had a free header but sent it off target.

Carnousties persistence paid off with a goal in 22 minutes but from a Roselea perspective it was preventable. Mylles sent in a long throw which travelled all the way to the six yard box and seemed to catch Roselea out and DAILLY lobbed a nice header over Mcleod.

Roselea were almost square in 25 minutes but lady luck deserted them when Watson cut inside and his left footed shot came off the base of the post then Cruickshank blasted the ball of a defender for a corner. When the corner came in Collier met it with a downward header which was cleared off the line by Mylles.

It was 2-0 Carnoustie in 33 minutes and again it was the long throw that caused the problems. This time Roselea defended it well however when the ball fell to BUGGINS at the edge of the box and his shot finally went into the corner despite Mcleod getting a hand to it.

Roselea were breaking well despite the scoreline not being in their favour and Cruickshank broke up the left before squaring to Rae at the edge of the box and although his shot took a big deflection it was not enough to divert the ball away from Ferrie in the home goal.

Just on half time Mcleod made a vital stop when he pushed a Buggins shot over the bar.

Despite the scoreline Roselea put in a great first half performance and only the finishing was the difference between the sides.

Half Time: Carnoustie Panmure 2 Montrose Roselea 0

Roselea thought they had got a vital lifeline in 48 minutes when Watson crossed to Cruickshank and his shot was flicked into the net but was correctly given as offside.

They did however get a goal back in 53 minutes when Collier played Calum WASTON in and he slid the ball into the bottom left hand corner with a great left footed finish.

Roselea thought they had an early chance to equalise in the 54th minute when Reid was put through and as they do these days, the Assistant took an age to make sure he was going for the ball some 30 yards after he was in the offside position.

It was all Roselea and Carnoustie were not coping and several fouls were committed with 3 yellow cards shown in quick succession. From one free kick from Rae, Collier headed back across goal and Reid blasted the ball from point blank range and Ferrie made a brilliant save to keep his side in front.

Anderson took a free kick in 59 minutes and curled the ball just over the top of the Carnoustie goal as Roselea dominated.

Watson and Reid again had chances but Carnoustie held firm as they looked to hold onto their lead.

Ferrie the home keeper was injured when he smothered a loose ball whilst under pressure from Watson and had to eventually be replaced by Sub keeper MacPherson.

Roselea made a change in 78 minutes with Danny Ross coming on for Paul Taylor.

Robertson of Carnoustie received a second yellow card in 80 minutes when he pulled down Anderson who had nut megged him at the edge of the box and took an early bath.

Roselea’s endeavour finally paid off with a great goal from Michael CRUICKSHANK in 81 minutes. Carnoustie conceded yet another free kick around the box and the winger sent an unstoppable ball into the top corner.

Roselea were well on top for the remaining 9 minutes plus stoppages but could not create anything of note and Carnoustie did eventually threaten on a couple of occasions from corner kicks however the match headed to the dreaded penalty kicks.

Full Time: Carnoustie Panmure 2 Montrose Roselea 2

Carnoustie were first up and Dailly made no mistake then Watson scored for Roselea. Bews missed for the home side with Mcleod saving then Reid pulled his kick wide. Black, Webster & Liam Scott all scored for Carnoustie and Ryan Taylor, Ross & Whyte all scored for Roselea. What happened next was nothing short of farcical as Milne scored for the home side with their 6th kick then just as Collier was placing the ball, Milne was reported to the referee for making a gesture to the crowd. Following a few minutes delay Milne was sent off then after another delay the referee correctly asked Reoch of Roselea to leave the centre circle. When the dust finally settled after about a 5 minute delay nobody could blame James Collier for being unsettled and he had his kick saved by Macpherson to send Carnoustie through.

Carnoustie win 5-4 on penalties

Penalties are always a sickening way to end a game however the red card incident did not help Roselea’s cause although it was a correct decision. It was even harder to take as the performance merited a win and penalties should probably not have even come into the equation. Carnoustie are holding their own in the Superleague so it made the performance look even better.

Roselea have another week away from the Premier League this time up at Dyce who top the North Regions Superleague in the GA Cup 3rd Round. The sides have met several times over the last few years with Roselea generally having the upperhand however Dyce are a much improved side. A bus will leave the Golf Inn at 12.00 and Kick off is at 2.30pm
