Posted by Graham Soutar on Apr 29 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
Findlay & Co Cup Violet v Montrose Roselea. Sat 29th April The Findlay & Co Cup took centre stage on Saturday as Roselea travelled to meet Violet in Dundee. With manager Balfour unavailable, Assistant Roy Gill took charge and with all the midweek games being played, it was another chance to use the full squad for this match. Roselea: Wands, Miller, Whyte, C. Masson, P. Masson, Craig, Christie, Forbes, Watson(Croall), Clayton(Simpson), Strachan(Longmuir). Subs: Keith, Page. Violet started the better on a very hard and bumpy pitch with Reynolds having a left foot shot which went narrowly past the left hand post. In 12 minutes another dangerous attack by Violet when Martin headed a free kick goal wards and Wands had to concede a corner. Roselea replied and a dangerous free kick from Christie was cleared at the expense of a throw in. Reynolds then had another effort but was easily saved by Wands as Violet strived to open the scoring. In 22 minutes Chris Masson sent a great ball through for Miller to run in on goal, but the full backs shot would have been more at home at Murrayfield, going well over the bar. Clayton then made a great run down the right sending in a dangerous cross but no takers were in the penalty area. A heated incident between Miller and Neilson of Violet ended with Miller going down in theatrical circumstances but the referee took no action. Roselea were awarded a penalty in 34 minutes when Strachan sent Clayton clear on the right and his cross was handled in the box by Martin. Chris Masson put the goalkeeper the wrong way to put Roselea in front. Minutes later it was almost two, as Christie swung in a dangerous free kick and Whyte headed back across the area where Watson miskicked a good chance in front of goal. Violet responded just before half time as Neilson set up Ballantine, but shot weakly past from a good position. HALF TIME - VIOLET 0 ROSELEA 1 Wands was called into action early in the second half saving a Neilson header as Violet looked to get back in the game. Christie of Violet then beat two players before setting up Neilson who shot into the side netting as Wands closed him down. In 53 minutes Roselea should have been two up. Christie sent in a free kick, which Watson headed against the bar and Chris Masson hit the rebound straight at the goalkeeper. A further great chance for Roselea when Christie took another free kick and hit the bar himself this time only for Craig to knock the rebound wide. Roselea now seemed to have control of the game and a good move down the right ended with Craig just unable to reach the ball before the goalkeeper. McDonald of Violet played a good ball into the box and Neilson got to the ball before Wands but his effort went wide. A good effort from Reynolds with a 25 yards shot had Wands watching as it went narrowly past the post. The last chance of the game fell to Roselea when Croall sent Longmuir free on the left and his driven cross was just ahead of Simpson at the back post. FULL TIME - VIOLET 0 ROSELEA 1 A hard working confidence boosting win against tricky opponents and on a bumpy surface sets Roselea up for their league run in and forthcoming Cup Final. East Craigie is next opponents in a league double header firstly away on Wednesday night followed by at Broomfield Park on Saturday. Kick Off 2.30pm.
