MONTROSE ROSELEA v ARBROATH VICS
GA CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND
SAT SEPT 27TH 2014

Roselea faced near neighbours Arbroath Vics in the Preliminary Round of the GA Cup with a home tie against Dundee Violet the reward for the winners.

Roselea welcomed back Craig Anderson, Michael Cruickshank and Morgan Smith however Paul & Ryan Taylor, Aaron Thomson and James Collier through injury were absent. Kane Hester was suspended for Vics having been sent off the previous week against Kirrie Thistle.

Despite Vics sitting in a lowly position in the North Division a tough game was expected from a side showing a mixture of experience and youth.

Roselea: Mcleod, Findlater, Cruickshank, Whyte, Reoch, Tringham, Anderson, McDowell, Rae, Reid & Watson. Subs: Smith, Bailey, Mitchell.

There was little to report in the opening 10 minutes with only a right footed Tringham shot which Cargill in the Vics goal saved easily then Warren skied over a shot from a narrow angle for Vics.

In 16 minutes Riddell of Vics was lucky to escape without a booking after catching Tringham late with his studs.

In 25 minutes Donald scopped a ball towards the Roselea ball and it was put behind the goal fo a corner. When the corner came in Watson tried to flick on for Vics with Anderson again turning it behind for a corner under severe pressure.

In 26 minutes Dale Reid passed up a great chance to open the scoring when Florence was short with a back pass and he nipped in to round the keeper but couldn’t keep his balance to slot into the open goal from a tight angle.

In 28 minutes Donald had a good drive heading for the upright turned round by home keeper Mcleod. From the dangerous corner Anderson had to head behind again as Vics continued to use the wind to their advantage.

In 32 minutes Watson was unlucky to be penalised and Sturrock sent in a great free kick which Craig Watson only just failed to connect with.

Sturrock of Vics had been booked and was dancing on thin ice after bringing Reid down as he broke away but remained on the field. Reid took the free kick hiself but only managed to make contact with the Vics wall.

In 40 minutes Watson of Arbroath Vics was very lucky not to find himself in the referee’s book after he launched the ball forty yards away a long time after being adjudged to be offside.

In 45 minutes Roselea took the lead with a goal coming from one of the few crosses which troubles the Vics defence. It was Andy Tringham who sent in a great cross at the perfect height for Calum WATSON to head home from 6 yards. Despite not being a classic display Roselea certainly deserved to go in ahead at half time.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Arbroath Vics 0

7 minutes into the second half Dale Reid played a great ball into Watson however keeper Cargill was alert for Vics and just made his interception in time.

In 52 minutes Donald of Vics had a long range shot but it was high and handsome being kind to the striker.

Cruickshank of Roselea then had a low drive which was going off target but Tringham deflected the ball goalwards and brought out a great save from Cargill.

In 70 minutes Reid again put Watson in and despite Sturrock clipping his heel he was deterimned to score but was once again foiled by Cargill.

Roselea made a change in 73 with Liam Bailey replacing Dale Reid.

There were more chances for Roselea with Cargill blocking a Watson drive then Whyte and Watson rose for a cross only to be foiled by Cargill yet again.

Roselea made a second change in 85 with Morgan Smith going on for Craig Anderson in the middle of the park.

Vics did not really create anything during the second period and it seemed like they were intent in keeping the score close in the hope for a break to force penalty kicks.

Roselea had one last chance when Morgan Smith’s low shot was turned goalwards by Watson and this time Cargill managed to foil him with his feet.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Arborath Vics 0

Although not a spectaculor victory this was enough for Roselea to progress in the GA Cup against a Vics side which did not seem to offer any spark to get into the game. Roselea will now face Dundee Violet at home in the 1st Round proper. Match Sponsors MGFA nominated Ross Mcleod as their man of the match having dealt with all that Vics could test him with.

On Sat Oct 4th Roselea are at home to Dalkeith Thistle in the McBookie.com Premier League with a 2.30pm KO. Dalkeith visited Broomfield Park three weeks ago and Roselea will be hoping for a similar 3-0 scoreline to get them moving in the League.
