4 Falcons land on Florida Sports Writers Association ALL-STATE TEAMS
Shortstop Rolando Gomez and left handed pitcher Corey Witkowski were named 1st TEAM ALL-STATE by the Florida Sports writers association while left handed pitcher R.J. Fondon and 2nd baseman Alejandro Sanchez were named Honorable Mention.
Rolando Gomez capped a sensational high school career as one of Flanagan high schools all-time best offensive players in the schools 12 year history. He earned 1st Team All-State honors for the 2nd time in his career (2006 & 2008) and 2nd Team All-State in 2007. His career numbers of .483 batting average, 28 HR's and 100 RBI are in the top 3 all time at Flanagan. Gomez was named the 2008 Broward County 6A Player of the Year and was an 11th round draft choice for the Anaheim Angels. He has signed a letter of intent to the University of Miami.
Corey Witkowski joins his brother Glenn as a 1st Team All-State selection after posting a 9-2 record, 1.17 ERA and 73 strikeouts. The senior lefthander had a breakout season in 2008 highlighted by a no-hitter against then undefeated JP Taravella in March. He will attend Barry University in the fall on a baseball scholarship.
R.J. Fondon is named honorable mention after a 7-4 season with a 2.85 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 2008. He was 10-1 and a 2nd Team All-State selection in 2007 after leading the Falcons to a berth in the State Final Four for the 3rd straight season. RJ will attend Florida International University on a baseball scholarship.
Alejandro Sanchez is named honorable mention after a senior season in which he made the switch from shortstop to 2nd base. He responded with a .400 batting average, 2 HR's and 26 RBI. Ali transferred in from Cypress Bay and was a crutial part of the District Championship game against the Lightning going 2 for 3 with a double and driving in 3 runs in the 8-4 win. He will be attending Bethune Cookman University in the fall on a baseball scholarship.
ANGELS select GOMEZ in 11th Round
Flanagan shortstop Rolando Gomez was selected in the 11th round of the MLB draft yesterday by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Gomez became Flanagan's highest draft pick since 2000 when Mike Napoli was picked by the Angels in the 17th round.
Second day of MLB draft yields more Florida picks
Through Thursday's six rounds, Flanagan's Rolando Gomez didn't hear his name called in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. So he drew a conclusion.
''After what happened [Thursday],'' Gomez said, ``I was almost pretty sure I was going to go to [the University of Miami].''
But he wasn't completely sure. And he still isn't.
Gomez, a shortstop projected by many as a first-day pick, fell to the Angels in the 11th round (349th overall) Friday. He said he wants a signing bonus of at least $500,000 to keep him from attending UM, but it is unclear if the Angels will pay that kind of money for such a late pick.
''[I'm] a little disappointed,'' said Gomez, The Miami Herald's 6A-5A Broward County Player of the Year. ``My dad, my whole family, my coaches were all told different things.''
There also were concerns about Gomez's size (5-7) and therefore his durability over the course of a full pro season, but few doubted his hitting ability. Gomez had eight home runs to go along with his 30-plus RBI and near-.500 average. Now Gomez is facing the pro-vs.-college decision -- one he has until August 15 to make.
