Dodge Crowned Homerun Champ

Posted by Ray Evans on Nov 06 2011 at 04:00PM PST

Flanagan hosted HSBN's first Homerun Derby this past Saturday night with 38 participants from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach county. A Falcon, Ryan Dodge, emerged the winner with a 2 round total of 16 homeruns hit. He now gets to participate in the National Power Hitting contest in Arizona at Chase Field in late December. He receives free entry and free round trip airfare to the event, a package estimated to be worth $1800.

On a night that the wind was howling from right field to left field the players did their best to keep it between the lines. Players got 15 outs to hit as many homeruns as possible during the first round in which Dodge was picked to lead off the event. He hit 3 HR's which was good enough to be one of the top 7 to move on to the second round. Jose Mesa also represented the Falcons and hit 2 homeruns in the first round.

In the second round the players got 12 outs to hit as many homeruns as possible. Mesa led off the second round and hit 2 HR's and missing 2-3 others by inches. By the luck of the draw and since he led off the first round, Dodge was able to go last in the second round. At least he would know how many he needed to win. As it turned about he would need to hit 7 to win. Dodge caught on fire and at one point hit 6 in a row. Once he hit number 7 the falcon players rushed him to congratulate him but were told to hold off. He needed to finish off his round so they could announce his total in Arizona.  He then continued to hit 6 more towering homeruns into the night to end up with a second round total of 13 and an overall of 16.

It was a great event that will only grow from this point on. Flanagan was picked to host the first time event by HSBN and it seemed to go off without a hitch. Thanks should go out to the Falcon Booster Club and all the players for helping on the field. Thanks should also go out to HSBN for letting the Flanagan Falcons host the event as well.

Congratulations to Ryan and good luck in Arizona in December.
