Posted by Ray Evans on Feb 06 2017 at 04:00PM PST

Luis Penate enters his 1st season with Ray Evans and his staff at Flanagan High School. Coach Penate will be assisting Coach Figueroa with the infielders, and Coach Stein with the hitting.

Luis, who was known as “Sweet Lou” in his playing days as a shortstop for the Falcons, was a 2007 graduate of Flanagan High School. He played for Coach Evans and his staff from 2004-2007. As the starting shortstop, Lou was a 4-year varsity lettermen that went to a Regional Final in 2004, won Back-To-Back State Titles in 2005-2006, and went to a Final Four in 2007. Lou was named All-County during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. After graduation, Lou was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 23rd round of 2007 MLB draft, but decided to continue his education by accepting a baseball scholarship to Central Florida Community College. He had 2 outstanding years at CFCC during the 08-09 seasons and was named to the All-Conference Team. After he finished his career at CFCC, Lou accepted another baseball scholarship to Nova Southeastern University, NSU. Lou would go on to finish his playing career and graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management in 2011.

Coach Penate believes in giving back where it all started for him, so he decided to come back to Flanagan High School to see this year’s players mature and grow into young men. He currently is a Physical Education Teacher at Saint Gregory Catholic School and resides in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
