ANGELS select GOMEZ in 11th Round

Posted by Joe Chacko on Jun 06 2008 at 05:00PM PDT

Flanagan shortstop Rolando Gomez was selected in the 11th round of the MLB draft yesterday by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Gomez became Flanagan's highest draft pick since 2000 when Mike Napoli was picked by the Angels in the 17th round.

Second day of MLB draft yields more Florida picks

Through Thursday's six rounds, Flanagan's Rolando Gomez didn't hear his name called in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. So he drew a conclusion.

''After what happened [Thursday],'' Gomez said, ``I was almost pretty sure I was going to go to [the University of Miami].''

But he wasn't completely sure. And he still isn't.

Gomez, a shortstop projected by many as a first-day pick, fell to the Angels in the 11th round (349th overall) Friday. He said he wants a signing bonus of at least $500,000 to keep him from attending UM, but it is unclear if the Angels will pay that kind of money for such a late pick.

''[I'm] a little disappointed,'' said Gomez, The Miami Herald's 6A-5A Broward County Player of the Year. ``My dad, my whole family, my coaches were all told different things.''

There also were concerns about Gomez's size (5-7) and therefore his durability over the course of a full pro season, but few doubted his hitting ability. Gomez had eight home runs to go along with his 30-plus RBI and near-.500 average. Now Gomez is facing the pro-vs.-college decision -- one he has until August 15 to make.
