Falcons Hold On Against Gators

Posted by Ray Evans on Mar 18 2014 at 05:00PM PDT

The Falcons scored 5 runs in the first two innings which ended up being enough for a 6-3 victory over the Everglades Gators in a District matchup. The Falcons improved to 10-0 and are 5-0 in District competition.

The Falcons got the scoring going in the 1st inning when Andres Rios led off with a single. Rios went to second on a ground ball by Luis Barranco. Then Oscar "Bui" Rodriguez came up and singled Rios home for an RBI and the first run of the game. Two hitters later Eric Rivera hit an RBI double down the right field line to score Rodriguez to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd the Falcons got it going again when Mora led the inning off with a HBP. David Sarmiento followed that with a BB and Miguel Presno singled to load the bases with no outs. After an RBI groundout by Rios, Barranco delivered a 2 RBI single to put the Falcons ahead 5-0.

With the score 5-3 in the top of the 7th, Rivera walked and stole 2nd.  Freshman pinch hitter Mark Vientos delivered a single to move Rivera to 3rd. Rivera scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-3. The Falcons had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but were unable to score another run.

Kharlin Sued started the game on the mound for the Falcons and pitched 6 innings to get the win. Sued went through the Gator lineup without much of a problem until the 6th inning.  With one out, the Gators lineup put together a surge with a double, a BB, and another double to score 2 runs to make the score 5-3. With the score 6-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Chris Rodriguez got the ball and shut the door on any hopes of an upset the Gators might have had with a 1-2-3 inning with 2 K's to record his 2nd save on the year.

The Falcons (10-0, 5-0) will host Hialeah on Friday, March 21st at 6:30pm in a non-district matchup.
