Flanagan Wins Championship

Posted by Ray Evans on Mar 27 2014 at 05:00PM PDT

The Flanagan Falcons won the coveted Sarasota Classic Tournament Championship game against Florida Christian 4-0.

The Falcons starting pitcher for the championship game was Chris Rodriguez. Rodriguez, also known as C-Rod, is usually the team's closer but was thrown into the starting role for the championship game. He rose to the occasion and came up with a stellar performance to pick up his second win on the season. Rodriguez pitched a complete 7 inning game while throwing only 70 pitches. He gave up 2 hits and struck out 5 while allowing only 3 base runners all evening.

The offense was led by Oscar "Bui" Rodriguez and Miguel Presno. They both had 2 hits and scored 1 run each. Presno also threw out the 1st runner to reach base in the first inning. It was only the 2nd out of the 1st inning, but it set an early tone of the type of game this would be.

The Falcons scored 2 runs in the 5th when Kharlin Sued walked, Presno followed with a single to right field. With 2 outs, Luis Barranco came up with an RBI single to make the score 1-0. Bui then followed that up with an RBI double to make the score 2-0.  In the 6th inning David Vazquez singled to left field with 1 out. David Sarmiento came in to run and got to third on a Kevin Mora single. Sarmiento scored to make the sore 3-0 when Mora stole second and the throw went astray.  Bui led off the top of the 7th inning with a double to left center.  Ryan Dodge capped the scoring on the night when he drove in Rodriguez to make the score 4-0.

The Falcons made their mark on the tournament bringing home the Offensive MVP in Ryan Dodge and the Tournament MVP in Chris Rodriguez.

The Falcons (14-1, 5-0) will be back at their home field when they take on McArthur in a District contest on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
