Falcons Win Walkoff Slugfest, 13-12, Against Coral Springs Colts

Posted by Jose Jimenez on Feb 23 2010 at 04:00PM PST

Despite sending 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and staking themselves to an 8-0 lead, the Flanagan Falcons (3-1) needed a walk off RBI single from senior catcher Corey Janson to break a 7th inning tie and defeat a resilient Coral Springs Colts ballclub, 13-12, at Falcons Field on Tuesday night.

The game that saw a combined 15 runs and 30 hits was a far cry from the 1-0 thriller played here last Friday between the Falcons and American Heritage.  Instead, the Falcons saw an 8 run first inning lead turn into a 9-8 deficit by the time the top of the third inning ended.  The Falcons would retake the lead, 10-9, in the bottom of the third, only to have the Colts tie it back up in the top half of the fourth.  In the home half of the 4th, the Falcons grabbed another one run lead at 11-10, but after a scoreless 5th inning, the Colts would again knot it up at 11-11 in the top of the 6th inning.  After the Falcons took a 12-11 lead into the final inning and recorded the first out, it looked like the gritty Colts (2-2) were on their way to their second straight one run defeat.  However, a few Falcon defensive miscues and a bases loaded walk would result in an unearned run, and yet another tie at 12-12, setting up the Janson heroics in the home half of the final frame.

Senior righthander, Justin Machado, earned his 2nd win of the season in relief, going 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and one earned run, while striking out 4 and walking 1.  Offensively,  Matt Figueroa (3-3, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2B, BB) and Pichi Torres (3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR, HBP) led the Falcon hit parade, with senior centerfielder Geoff Jimenez (2-5, R, 3 RBI, HR, SB) and junior shortstop Ricky Santiago (2-4, R, RBI, HR, BB, SB) also providing the long ball.  Three other Falcons had multi-hit ballgames, including Collin Martindale (2-5, R, SB), Mike Melendez (2-4, R, RBI, 2B, BB, SB) and Ryan Lozada (2-4, R, RBI, SB).

The Falcons are back in action at home on Friday, 2/26, at 6:30pm against district foe, Everglades Gators.
