Falcons Stunned By Bulldogs, 2-1, In District Semifinal

Posted by Jose Jimenez on Apr 30 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

The 2009 season ended in stunning disappointment on Thursday afternoon as the Flanagan Falcons were defeated by the South Broward Bulldogs, 2-1, in the District 12-6A semifinal at McArthur High School.  The hopes of another successful Falcon postseason were crushed by the complete game performance from Bulldogs starter Ashley Bulluck, who limited the boys in green to three hits and one unearned run.

Falcons starter Mark Peterson (2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 1 BB) and Adam Quiles (4 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 2 BB) did all they could to keep it close, hoping for the Flanagan offense to mount a rally, as it had done time and time again, all season long.  However, on this afternoon, the bats were quiet as a pair of doubles from juniors Corey Janson and Geoff Jimenez, and a single from freshman Nick Basto, were all the hits the Falcons could manage off Bulluck.

The Falcons end their 2009 campaign with a 22-4 record, with all four losses decided by one run.  Despite the heartbreak associated with such a painful loss, the Falcons impressed all season long, with a potent offense that hit .345 as a team, with 39 HR and an OBP of .471, while outscoring opponents 237-92.  Just as impressive, the Flanagan pitching staff was one of Broward's best, holding opponents to a .239 batting average, with a team ERA of 2.72 and an outstanding 172/70 strikeout to walk ratio.  With six of eight position starters returning in 2010, and a solid crop of risng underclassmen, the future remains bright for one of Broward county's top baseball programs.
