1st Annual Falcons Baseball Alumni Game is a Big Hit

Posted by Jose Jimenez on Nov 29 2008 at 04:00PM PST

In the first ever Flanagan Falcons Baseball Alumni Game, it was the even year graduates Green squad defeating the odd year graduates Black squad, 9-3, behind solid pitching and the big bat of Alumni Game MVP and pre-game Home Run Derby Champ, J.D. Martinez.  Martinez, a 2006 Flanagan graduate now attending Nova Southeastern University, put the Falcons Green team ahead with a grand slam in the bottom of the first, and ended the night 2 for 4 with five RBI, adding a scorched RBI double to left field in the fourth inning for good measure.  The Green team also got solid offensive performances from fellow 2006 graduates Fred Collin (2-5, 3B, R) and Eric McCans (2-3, 2B, BB, 2 R).

2007 graduates and Central Florida Community College teammates, Jesse Mesa (2-3, RBI) and Luis Penate (1-3, 2B, R), led the offense for the Black team, but the early 4-0 deficit was simply too much to overcome on this night.

All in all, it was a well played and spirited game that brought out not only the former players and their families, but current players, families and fans, looking to catch a glimpse of the Falcons magic of yesteryear.  Former Falcons Baseball Booster Club Presidents Lou Alvarez, Don McCans and David Goldberger were in attendance, as well as the first ever Falcons Baseball head coach, Juan Ledesma.  Falcons Baseball Booster Bud Hall, who has been instrumental in the recent facility improvements and the success of our annual golf tournament, came by to enjoy the festivities.

The game dubbed “Under the Lights” was a huge success, marking the beginning of a special tradition for the Flanagan Falcons Baseball program that will take place every Friday after Thanksgiving.
