HHS DEFEATS CENTRAL MAGNET 5-1

Posted by Andy Gilley on May 02 2017 at 05:00PM PDT

The Commandos ended their regular season with a 5-1 win over Murfreesboro Central Magnet.

Sophomore Keaton Wilson got his second win in as many days.  After getting a win in relief on Wednesday against Goodpasture, the left hander got his first career start on Thursday.  Wilson delivered for the Commandos with 5 solid innings of work, allowing only 1 earned run and striking out 4 while giving up only 2 hits.

HHS got on the board first in the bottom of the third.  Eli White walked with one out.  A two out walk to Austin Mays put runners at first and second for Harrison Williams.  Williams delivered a two-out single to drive in courtesey runner Grant Lang to give HHS the 1-0 lead.

Central got a run to tie the game in the top of the 4th.  The Commandos bounced back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the 4th. Brett Coker led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Hayden Layne.  Coker scored on a two-out single from Hayden Mullins to make the score 2-1.

After Wilson got the side in order in the top of the 5th the Commandos scored again in the bottom of the fifth.  Reid Nelson led off with a walk and after another single from Coker and a walk to Layne to load the bases, Nelson scored on a balk to make it 3-1 Commandos.

Senior Matt Nicoll took over on the mound for HHS in the 6th.  Nicoll struck out two hitters and got the Commandos back in the dugout where they would add two more runs.  Caid Sanders walked to lead off the inning.  Gaylen Rutledge had a pinch hit single to move Sanders to third.  A Reid Nelson sac fly scored Sanders to make the score 4-1.  Rutledge would come around to score on a two-out single from Austin Mays to make the score 5-1.

Nicoll retired the side in order in the top of the 7th to pick up his first save of the year and end the game.

With the win the Commandos improved to 21-8 on the year.  HHS will next play at Wilson Central in the first round of the District 9AAA tournament against Mt Juliet at 4:00 on Friday afternoon.
