Posted by Ken Cicalo on Jun 26 2006 at 05:00PM PDT in Spring 2016
All five Hilltoppers All-Star teams have completed their District tournaments, signaling the end of the 2006 season. 9&10-year-olds: Dropped their first game on July 3 to University City. They concluded tournament play on July 6, dropping a game to Scripps Ranch National. This tournament was hosted by Clairemont Mesa Little League. 10&11-year-olds: Their opening game on Monday, July 3 against Rancho Penasquitos South was dramatic, with the Hilltoppers dropping a squeaker to a fine RP South squad. They then defeated Mission Bay 5-0 on July 6. They concluded play with a loss to Scripps Ranch National on July 8. This tournament was hosted by Mira Mesa. 11&12-year-olds: On July 1, our Majors All-Stars locked up in a tight pitcher's duel with Scripps Ranch American, eventually coming out on the short end of a 3-0 decision. Their next game on July 6 was a very hard-fought game against Rancho Penasquitos Central. Hilltoppers scored two runs in the last inning to edge RP 6-5. Their tournament ended with a loss to Clairemont Mesa on July 8. Rancho Penasquitos hosted this tournament. Our Juniors All-Stars began District tournament play on Thursday, June 29, battling a determined University City team, before dropping a 9-5 decision. Their next game on July 6 against Coronado was a 5-5 tie when called for darkness after 8 innings. Completing this epic game on July 8, these two teams went round and round until our Hilltoppers pulled it out in spine-tingling fashion in 13 innings. Later that day, they were defeated by Peninsula to end their tournament run. This tournament was played at the Mira Mesa Little League fields. Seniors: Our 15&16-year-olds won their first game 13-3 on July 5 against University City. Their final game was an 11-3 loss to Mission Bay on July 6. Thanks to all the parents and coaches who worked so hard to get their teams ready for these tournaments. Thanks also to all the players who provided thrills and excitement in their games.
