The Bulldogs won their third straight game after their 0-2 start by besting Wakefield 6-1 and taking first place in the very early going of Intercity League play.
On this night there were no comebacks or late game nail biters as the Bulldogs put up the only runs they needed in their first at-bat.
Wakefield started Peter Fischer, eight year minor league pitcher whom almost 20 years ago was one of the top schoolboy pitching prospects in New England. Reading got to him early when Hank Oringer singled home two runs and tacked two more on in the fourth when the speed twins Oringer and Darren Hartwell each had a hit, a stolen base and a run.
From there crafty Bulldog lefty Kevin Church made short work of the Merchants, scattering eight hits while striking out five as he worked fast and efficiently all evening.
The only real threat for a big inning came in the fifth inning after the first two Wakefield batters singled. After one out it was Hartwell with his signature diving catch taking a hit away and then from his knees doubling up the runner off of second base. It was Hartwell's second outfield assist of the game.
The Bulldogs are off until Sunday at 5PM at Morton Field where they take on the Watertown Reds.
