Paddle for the Lynnhaven River
Paddle for the Lynnhaven River, Saturday, April 25
The conditions were windy and warm on the Lynnhaven Saturday. Karen Forget, Director of Lynnhaven River Now, greeted us in the morning and shared with us some recent successes on the river. 60 acres are now protected. Eliminating fertilizers and fertilizer run-off into the river is an on-going challenge. Saturday's event had 23 participants who raised $365 for Lynnhaven River Now. Thanks to everyone who participated.
The Stand-up Paddlers drove up wind to a put in on Linkhorn Bay and had a nice downwind paddle back to the beach. Many thanks to Bill and Anne Gassett for organizing the SUP and driving the six paddlers to the start.
Eugene Link led the race in his surf ski and finished first with a time of 1:10.10. Chuck Conley and Tammy Harper swept in behind Eugene about a minute later in a tandem surf ski. Surf skis were popular on Saturday -- Kyle McLain, Phil Mutton, Margo Duplessis, and Rich Hamady all paddled skis. Audrey and Richard joined us from Charlottesville and paddled C2. Rusty and Leza logged more miles in their C2 training for the 70 miler. Lew Barker paddled his beautiful wooden kayak. Tim Jones and Freda Rosso got a good training paddle in on their single outrigger canoes. Freda stopped along the way and took race photos which we'll post soon. Suzanne, Jenny and Susie paddled into Crystal Lake and across the river into a cove with one of the oldest and largest oyster beds on the river.
