CABLE, Wis. — After recently conquering the state of Minnesota in cross-country skiing, three members of the Duluth East Nordic team decided to see if they could extend their empire to include Wisconsin — or at least the northwestern portion of it.
They were successful, claiming first place in the inaugural Junior Birkie Team Relay event held at Telemark Resort in Cable Friday afternoon. Each of the 13 boys’ teams and seven girls’ squads had three skiers who each completed one circuit around the 2.2-kilometer course.
Jason Kask, a 17-year-old junior, said Friday’s team championship is an extension of what the Greyhounds have accomplished all season.
“We won state, so it was a very successful season. It was also an undefeated season,” Kask said. “I found out about this online and we thought it would be pretty fun.”
The trio from Duluth completed their laps in 19 minutes, 50.6 seconds, 21 seconds quicker than second-place Winona (Wis.) at 20:11.5. Hayward was a distant third place, finishing the race in 20:24.0.
“We’re actually better at longer courses because of our training,” said Jake Boyce, 17, who is a senior.
The Duluth East trio of Steph LaFrance, Karli Miller and Bria Kask placed third in the girls’ race with a time of 26:01.1, while Hayward (24:14.3) and Waukesha West (25:06.7) finished first and second, respectively.
For two of the winning ’Hounds, the weekend’s festivities are not over, as LaFrance, a 17-year-old junior, and Boyce will ski the 23K Kortelopet race today. It will be LaFrance’s second Kortelopet after skiing the half marathon last year.
“It was fun,” LaFrance said. “I had a great time.”
Other American Birkebeiner-related events Friday included the Children’s Snowshoe Nature Hike at the Cable Natural History Museum, the 10K race at Telemark Resort and the Citizens Sprints on Main Street in Hayward.
Prior to Friday’s team relay event, approximately 229 individual skiers took part in the Junior Birkie. The top three finishers in each boys’ and girls’ division, as well as team standings, are listed below:
