After being a force in MCAL for several years, only one thing has eluded the Redwood High softball team - a North Coast Section championship. But after the final out was made in the NCS Class 3A Redwood Empire championship game against Windsor, there was only one way to describe Redwood's 5-2 win.

"It feels awesome," Redwood's Whitney Shaw said. "I've obviously never felt this way considering we've never won (an NCS title).

Coach John RebstockSorcerer coach John Rebstock has been selected as CIF North Coach Section Honor Coach for 2008.

Rebstock is only the 23rd coach ever so honored for the award, a NCS section coaching hall of fame of sorts and lifetime achievement award. Honor coaches are selected for coaching accomplishments, as well as for major contributions to the regional softball community.

Last year John was honored as California Coach of the Year for leading Heritage High School of Brentwood to the NCS East Bay 2A championship in the school's first year of varsity competition, a feat never before accomplished.

Rebstock is the second Sorcerer coach to be enshrined by NCS. Head Coach Phil Mumma was selected as an NCS Honor Coach during the 2001 season. Major props to John!

The Bay Valley Athletic League softball and baseball seasons concluded last week, as Freedom High School swept the league titles and stormed into this week’s North Coast Section playoffs looking to build on that success.

The Falcon softball team, which finished the regular season with an impressive 23-2 overall record and a 15-1 mark in league play, earned the No. 1 seed heading into the NCS 3A playoffs and hosted Washington (Fremont) on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the No. 16 seed Huskies 6-1. With the win, the Falcons advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round, where they hosted Berkeley after the Press went to print.

Pitcher Hannah Williams led the way for the Falcons on Tuesday, settling down after allowing a solo home run in the first inning and shutting Washington out the rest of the way, finishing with 14 strikeouts.
