Sorcerer Struggles Through Weekend

Posted by Derrick Burns at Jun 1, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

In what may have been a display of nervousness following a change in the team composition and the absence of 2 seniors, Sorcerer suffered our first non-winning showcase in two years with a record of 2 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie this past weekend in the Grapettes June Classic.

Yet the weekend was not a total loss, as Jordan Wallace, Whitney Shaw, and Hannah Wlliams each hit homeruns, with Hannah's reported to have traveled over both fences on the Stadium field at Arnaiz Park, landing in the street.

Also of note, Sorcerer hitters only struck out 12 times in 5 games, or an average of just 2.4 times per game, suggesting that Sorcerer offense will be a mighty weapon throughout the summer, while Sorcerer pitchers combined to strike out 27 opponents.

But when our power hitters are not hitting the ball, it seems that they are being hit by a pitch. Jordan Wallace extended her lead in that category by getting hit 4 times this weekend -- ouch, where is the ice -- while teammate Whitney Shaw was hit twice.

Sorcerer continues play this weekend in Stockton at the RR Showcase of Talent, sporting two returning players, Cal freshman pitcher and leadoff hitter Val Arioto and Oregon-committed pitcher Jessica Moore. With the return of the recent high school graduates, Mississippi State-bound Courtney Moore and Stanford-bound Maya Burns, and the addition of these new players, we expect Sorcerer performance to pick up.
