EAGLES OFF TO GOOD START

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Dec 25, 2011 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Trumbull Eagles are off to a solid 4-1-0 start and sit at the top of the CIAC D2 standings.  With so many new faces in the line-up the Eagles were due for some ups and downs but have worked hard to build themselves a nice cushion as they enter the FCIAC portion of their schedule.

The first line of Ahearn, Riley and Strobel has been very effective and with Cory Watson in the mix, the power play has been sharp early in the season. THS must find some secondary scoring and be a bit better in the defensive zone but the effort has been there and the team looks to improve every week.

LEADERSHIP

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Dec 13, 2011 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Trumbull Eagles will be led by senior captain, Michael Ahearn and senior alternate captains, Brandon Elbert and Cory Watson.  Ahearn led the Eagles in scoring last season and should pick up right where he left off.  Elbert and Watson will anchor the Trumbull defense with their physical play and experience.

All three players are hard workers and committed teammates.  Their leadership will be invaluable with so many new players in the line up this season.

NEW YEARS EVE HS HOCKEY FACE OFF

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Dec 13, 2011 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Newtown Nighthawks bested the Watertown Indians 4-1 and the Trumbull Eagles beat the Branford Hornets 7-6 in OT during the first annual New Years Eve High School Hockey Face-Off.

Branford dominated the early going, jumping out to a commanding 5-1 lead as a sluggish THS defense struggle with the Hornets aggresive forecheck.  Just when it looked like it was time to pack the bus, Branford took a string of penalties that allowed Michael Ahearn and the Trumbull power play to get the Eagles back into the game.  THS scored three power play goals and Ahearn ended the night with 4g & 2a including the short handed game winner in OT.

It was a great event for all the teams involved and the win improves Trumbull's record to 5-1-0.

EAGLES BEAT WESTHILL IN OT

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Mar 11, 2011 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The quarter final game of the CIAC tournament showed the best (and at times the worst) of the Trumbull Eagles.  The THS skaters got off to a slow start spotting Westhill two early goals including one in the first shift of the game.  Westhill brought an aggressive physical game and badly out shot the Eagles (THS managed only 4 shots in the 2nd frame) over the first two periods.

And then, like so many times during the regular season, the real Trumbull Eagles showed up.  Trailing 4-2 going into the third period, sophomore, Matt Paolini settled in (43 saves) and Trumbull grabbed hold of the game.  Max Walker and Mike Ahearn move the puck well the the Eagle power play was on the mark.  Ahearn's two third period goals tied the game setting the stage for Max Walker's OT winner in the final minutes of a hard fought OT period.

Goals: Dimasi, Hyde, Ahearn (2) & Walker
Assists: Watson (2), Ahearn (2), Kennedy & Hyde

CIAC DII SEMI FINALS

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Feb 23, 2011 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Trumbull Eagles fell to the top seeded Guilford Indians in the CIAC DII Semi Final by a score of 2-4.  The Eagles came out strong with an early goal from Alex Hyde who took a pretty pass from Shaun Kennedy.  THS seemed to let off the gas during the second period and were dominated by the Indians.  Trailing 1-3, freshman Vincent Russello scored late to make the game interesting at 2-3 but Guilford got the insurance goal in the final minutes to end Trumbull's season.
