TRUMBULL EAGLES WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Mar 8, 2012 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Trumbull Eagles trailed 2-0 entering the third period of the CIAC DII final but THS would not be denied their title shot.  Michael Ahearn scored an early power play goal and once the ball got rolling it looked like it could not be stopped.  Tim Riley and Brendan Strobel would each score to give THS the lead but the Hornets evened things up with a power play goal of their own.  Trumbull's first line was firing on all cylinders and the Hornet defense had no answer.  Ahearn made a great feed to Strobel for the game winner and then potted the empty netter to deliver Trumbull's first State Championship.  Matt Paolini made 35 saves and the Eagle defense, led by Cory Watson and Brandon Elbert punished the Branford forwards all game.

CIAC Semi-Final Trumbull got off to fast start with three first period goals in their semi-final versus the #1 ranked Guilford Indians.  The Indians fought back, scoring three straight power play goals to even the game a three apiece at the end of two.  Matt Paolini made 39 saves to hold off a potent Guilford offense that seemed to be roling.  THS showed great composure and got back on the attack in the third.  Brendan Strobel scored a power play goal which would wind up being the game winner.  Ahearn scored a back breaking short handed goal and then bagged the empty netter for a hat-trick.  Tim Riley and AJ Dimasi each contributed a goal.  The victory was sweet revenge as Guilford knocked the Eagles out last year in the semi's before losing in the final to Chesire.

Trumbull and Branford met earlier in the season with the Eagles winning a wild game at The Harbor Yard by out gunning the Hornets 7-6.  The bus will leave The Rinks at 5:15pm.

CIAC Quarterfinal It only took thirty-two seconds for senior, Tim Riley to open the scoring for the Trumbull Eagles in their CIAC quarterfinal versus the Wilton Warriors. Riley scooped up a rebound which he fired past the opposing goaltender, bringing a packed Wonderland of Ice to their feet. Trumbull's top gun, Michael Ahearn, kept the heat on, notching a natural hat-trick to give THS a 4-0 first period lead.  Wilton tried to crawl back but Matt Paolini came up with one big save after another for 30 stops on the night.

CIAC Round #1 It was all Trumbull as the Eagles (#5) skated to a convincing 6-0 victory over Watertown (#12) in the opening round of the CIAC State Tournament.  THS struck early with two first period goals.  The Trumbull defense continued their strong play, shutting down the Indians top line.  Matt Paolini made twenty saves to secure the shut-out.  Trumbull got goals from Michael Ahearn (2g + 2a), Brendan Strobel (2g + 1a) and Nate Walker (2g). Sean Dufficy and Alex Pierne added assists.

The Eagles (#4) knocked off the Fairfield Mustangs (#1) in the first round of the FCIAC tournament by a score of 3-1.  Matt Paolini was solid between the pipes for Trumbull who got goals from Brendan Strobel, Michael Ahearn and Brandon Elbert.  Ahearn and Elbert each added an assist as did Tim Riley.

EAGLES HAVE STRONG FIRST HALF

Posted by Coach Gonzo at Jan 13, 2012 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

The Trumbull Eagles lost a heart breaker to cross town rival, St Josephs by a score of 4-3.  The THS skaters outworked and outshot the Cadets in the early going to jump out to 2-0 lead.  A pair of goals in the last minute of the second period had the Eagles enter the final frame up 3-1.  THS failed to  deliver the final blow on an early 3rd period power play and the Cadets began to work over the fatigued THS skaters.  Three tallies in the third, including the game winner with 17.7 seconds left sent the black and gold packing.

Trumbull hits the halfway mark of the season with a record of 7-3-0 and sits at the top of the DII standings.  HNIB has the Eagles ranked third in the state DII poll. One more win will qualify Trumbull for another post season appearance.
