PLAYER OF THE WEEK
When you score two goals in a 3-1 win over cross town rival, St Joe’s, you’re going to be the Player of the Week. Senior, Owen Finnegan opened the scoring by beating the Cadet goalie with a bullet off a nice pass from line mate, John Guererra. Later, the center was hauled down on a break away in the third period and awarded a penalty shot. This time, Finnegan beat the SJ netminder with a deke to lock down the 3-1 victory. The captain is currently second in points with 8 (3g + 5a) and was recognized by the FCIAC as one of their exemplary scholar athletes for his academic achievements.
EAGELS TAKE COACH EDDY CUP!
After a scoreless first period, Owen Finnegan opened the scoring for the Eagles. The Cadets came right back to tie things up. Freshman, Nick Smagacz came up with the eventual game winner, a snipe that put Trumbull up 2-1 going into the third. During the final frame, Finnegan was hauled down on a break away and awarded a penalty shot which he scored on to ice the 3-1 victory for Trumbull.
The Eagle captains accepted the first annual Coach Eddy Cup celebrating Edward LeMaire, the spirit of competition and this great rivalry.
The Coach Eddy Cup
Voted the best rivalry in CT High School Hockey last year by @CTHSHockey, St Joseph and Trumbull will meet this Thursday 02/25/21 at The Shelton Rinks to continue that rivalry. The puck drops at 3:15pm.
This season the two teams will battle for the Coach Eddy Cup dedicated to long time coach, Edward LeMaire, who passed away suddenly last year. “Coach Eddy” worked with countless area hockey players including many players on both the Cadets’ and Eagles’ current rosters.
The Cadets are currently 1-4-0 but have played well against their D1 FCIAC opponents under new Head Coach, Christopher Nelson. The Eagles are currently 3-1-0 and bested the Cadets last season 6-3. Trumbull has won three of the last four meetings between these two cross town rivals.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Our second POW for the 2021 season goes to senior, John Guerrera. The right wing scored the Eagles only goal in a 5-1 loss to a strong Fairfield team. Through the first four games of the season, Guerrera is currently second in goals with 3, second in assists with 4 and second in total points with 7.
Guerrera brings speed and skill to the line up and has shown the ability to score big goals when the Eagles have needed them this season.
