GROSSE POINTE SOUTH 2008 STATE CHAMPIONS!
Grosse Pointe South's Lady Blue Devils defeated the Ann Arbor Pioneers 4-2 in the championship game. Detroit’s City Sports Arena was rocking Saturday night where both schools had great fan support.
South’s Kelsey Burgess scored first, assisted by linemate Emma Hull, at 4:01 remaining in the first. Shots in the first were 6-3 in favor of South. Each team had three penalties in the first, but neither was able to capitalize on the powerplay.
South’s Alex Rentz made it 2-0 with 12:13 on the clock in the second, assisted by Annie Shepard. Ann Arbor answered at 8:20 when Annie Sturgeon scored, from Emy Guttman and Kelsey Raver. This began a steady drumbeat of offensive pressure by Ann Arbor. Shots in the second were 14-10 in favor of the Pioneers, and they kept the heat on in the third period as well, with 13 more shots to South’s three (game total 30-20 in favor of Ann Arbor). But South’s CJ Jarboe turned aside all but one of the remaining shots in an awesome performance, finishing the game with 28 saves and the MVP.
In the last 4 minutes of the game, South’s Rentz again found a way to score from Shepard, making it 3-1. Ann Arbor MVP Angie Chronis scored on the powerplay just 40 seconds later, making it 3-2. But South’s speedster Jenna Huitsing would put it away with a top-shelf breakaway goal at 1:11 remaining in the game, unassisted.
Congratulations to both teams for a great season.
