On January 31, the Northville Mustangs took on the Mercy Marlins at Suburban Ice Arena. The Mustangs came out strong, dominating play and scoring 2 and a half minutes into the game. Bridget Hughes hit a rebound from a shot of Amy Cauzillo's. Just 2 mintues later Hughes was at it again getting another goal for the Mustangs. The game heated up a bit with six penalites in just the first period. With only a minute left in the first period, the Marlins Rachel Miller got a shot past the Mustangs goalie. The second period was just like the first, very physical and very good for the Mustangs. In the early second period, Bridget was robbed of her hat trick when the puck was put into the back of the net but the ref waved it off due to someone being in the crease. Later, Hughes passed the puck to Sam Pope who left it to Cauzillo for the 3rd goal for the Mustangs. Just three minutes later Cauzillo was at it again with a breakaway going around the Marlins goal for an unassisted goal. The third period started out with a penalty on the Mustangs for warming up before the period got underway. Even though Northville was down a player, they kept the Marlins out of the net. After numerous penalites on both sides, Pope managed to get the puck to Cauzillo who took it up for another breakaway and Cauzillo's third goal giving her a hatrick and Pope a playmaker. Finally, with just a minute left in the game, Hughes passed the puck back to Marie McIntyre who dumped it to Cauzillo once again who fired a shot passed the Marlin goalie. Cauzillo had 4 goals for the night. There were 11 penalities in the 3rd period alone. The Mustangs next game is against the Mercy Marlins again on Wednesday night at 8:10 at Novi Ice Arena. Come support the Mustangs!

On January 28, 2004, the Mustangs faced off against the Knights from University Liggett. The Mustangs came out strong, completely dominating play in the first period. With five minutes gone in the first period, Bridget Hughes recived a pass from Amy Cazillo and redirected the puck into the net, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The Mustang's lead continued to grow as Sam Gumina took a shot at the Knights goalie who gave up a rebound. Kate Latham scored off the rebound, putting the Mustangs up 2-0. The final goal of the game came with just under five minutes left to play in the first period. Andrea Soloko skated the puck up the ice and deked out the goalie for an unassisted goal. This put the Mustangs up 3-0. The second period was a great defensive period for both teams and uneventful until the last few seconds. As time ran out in the period, Rachel Reuter was checked, sending her flying through the air into the boards. Reuter could not move for a few moments, causing great concern amongst all the people in the arena. EMS arrived at the scene and took Reuter off the ice and to the hospital. Luckily, Reuter suffered no major injury. The third period was a twenty minute running clock due to the curfew clock. It was fairly uneventful until the last two minutes of play. Cauzillo got a penalty for tripping, giving the Knights a penalty shot. The Mustangs goalie was able to stop the penalty shot, keeping the Mustangs 3-0 lead. The game ended shorlty after, giving the Mustangs their first shutout ever. Congratultions on a great game!

Northville vs. Ladywood

Posted by Bill Holden at Jan 9, 2004 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Northville Mustangs and the Ladywood Blazers faced off again on Jan 10 for another close game. The last time the two teams met, the game ended with a win for the Mustangs in overtime. However, this time they were not so lucky. The game started out to a rough start, in just 4 minutes there had already been 5 penalties. But the game soon calmed down and midway through the first period, Sam Pope received a pass from Stephanie Papich and Pope put it in the net. Near the end of the first, Ladywood got their first goal. The second peirod followed the same as the first and when the Mustangs went into the lockeroom, the score was 2-2. After the intermission, the Blazers got a goal with a Mustang goal soon followed. Andrea Soloko took the puck up the ice and took a hard shot from the blue line, putting it right passed the Blazer goalie. The score was now tied 3-3 and there were only 4 minutes left in the game. Ladywood got a shot passed Mustang goalie, Danielle Bigi, and the Mustangs began to lose hope. With one minute left the Blazers put another goal in and the Mustangs knew it was over. These two teams are defintley well matched and hopefully will meet again in the playoffs for a tie-breaker game. The Mustangs have won one game and the Blazers have won one.
