It took over 57 minutes of playing time with 2 overtime sessions to decide this year?s MMGHSHL State Championship. For the fourth year in a row, defending champs, Grosse Pointe South faced off against Cranbrook Kingswood on Saturday night at Novi Ice Arena. South would open the scoring at 5:25 of the first period when Captain Sarah Parker scored with assists going to Amanda Marsh and Katie Dosch. South would score again on a beautiful solo effort by league point leader, Ali Morawski at 5:34 of the second period. Cranbrook would score their first just 17 seconds later with a goal from Ariel Magidson and an assist went to Liz Belen. Then, 59 seconds later, Cranbrook Captain, Tarasai Karega would tie the game with an unassisted goal of her own. The third period would go scoreless and regulation would end in a 2-2 tie. The defense of both teams played great all night long, especially the goalies, South?s Whitney Hughes and Cranbrook?s Hilary Schreiber. The first overtime session would come and go. Then at 3:34 of overtime, with both teams exhausted, Cranbrook?s Karega fired a slap shot to end the game. It was the longest final in league history but just another classic battle between South and Cranbrook. It was also the most competitive playoff race in league history with eight overtime periods, three overtime games and six one-goal games. Thanks to all the players, coaches, parents, family and friends for a great week. Also, many thanks to the Northville Tournament Committee and Novi Ice Arena staff for hosting yet another fantastic series.image

Three overtimes ends Northville's playoff run

Posted by Bill Holden at Mar 9, 2005 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The Mustangs fought hard last night against the PCS penguins and it showed on the scoreboard. The first period started out strong for the 'stangs with a goal by Anjali Saran. PCS picked it up and scored a goal of their own. Northville came back again with another goal by Amy Cauzillo. PCS returned the favor once again and then just a minute later scored once more to make the score 3-2. The score would remain this way until just two minutes left in regulation play. The outlook looked slim for Northville as the seconds ticked down until the end of the third period. But with 2:53 left to go, Bridget Hughes took a shot on net. The goalie deflected it and Sam Pope took the puck around the back of the net and did a wrap around to tie the game for the Mustangs. As the seconds continued to count down, both teams knew what was next...Sudden Death Overtime. Northville started the first overtime on a powerplay, but couldnt seem to get the puck past the Penguin goalie. Northville dominated the first as well as the second overtime but still no goals were scored. As the third overtime began, both teams were exhausted, out of breath and beginning to lose their focus. At 4:19, their was a scramble in front of the net and no one could seem to find the puck. A Mustang attempted to clear the puck and it deflected of a players' foot past Northville goalie LeeCee Criswell. Obviously, Northville was crushed at the unfortunate end to their season. MVP for the Mustangs was Sam Pope. We had a great season girls! Don't ever forget that. We bonded as a team and became so close that it showed on the ice. Now we have to say goodbye to seniors Sam Pope, Amy Cauzillo, Cate Spurr, Annie Kirkpatrick and Kim Bagian. Our team will never be the same without them, but we have to look into the future for next season and be ready for whatever it brings. Congratulations girls for getting as far as we did!
