South beat Plymouth Canton salem in the State Championship game! Congratulation to all the players!image
It took over 57 minutes of playing time with 2 overtime sessions to decide this year?s MMGHSHL State Championship. For the fourth year in a row, defending champs, Grosse Pointe South faced off against Cranbrook Kingswood on Saturday night at Novi Ice Arena. South would open the scoring at 5:25 of the first period when Captain Sarah Parker scored with assists going to Amanda Marsh and Katie Dosch. South would score again on a beautiful solo effort by league point leader, Ali Morawski at 5:34 of the second period. Cranbrook would score their first just 17 seconds later with a goal from Ariel Magidson and an assist went to Liz Belen. Then, 59 seconds later, Cranbrook Captain, Tarasai Karega would tie the game with an unassisted goal of her own. The third period would go scoreless and regulation would end in a 2-2 tie. The defense of both teams played great all night long, especially the goalies, South?s Whitney Hughes and Cranbrook?s Hilary Schreiber. The first overtime session would come and go. Then at 3:34 of overtime, with both teams exhausted, Cranbrook?s Karega fired a slap shot to end the game. It was the longest final in league history but just another classic battle between South and Cranbrook. It was also the most competitive playoff race in league history with eight overtime periods, three overtime games and six one-goal games. Thanks to all the players, coaches, parents, family and friends for a great week. Also, many thanks to the Northville Tournament Committee and Novi Ice Arena staff for hosting yet another fantastic series.image
