News and Announcements

20 Apr. '08. After two exhausting Region 1 matches yesterday and a long drive home from Kirkwood SC, the Internationals had a very early morning wake-up and another long drive up to Harford County Polo Grounds for Round 3 match play versus a tough Freestate Dragons, formerly Bowie Dragons, and now playing in D1 of NCSL. Unlike yesterday’s sunny skies, today’s weather turned ominous with cloudy, overcast skies and intermittent heavy rain in the local area of I495/I95 northbound, but ended just south of Baltimore. Although there were threatening, dark clouds at HCPG, the weather cooperated for Inter's match with the Dragons who displayed a very similar tenacious defense like the NJ Knights yesterday, constantly pressuring the ball and working extremely hard. After yesterday’s meltdown, Inter was determined/focused to keep the game in hand and its defense was in sync, holding the Dragons from any shots on goal except a DK. At about the (19) minute mark, Ben was called for fouling a Dragon’s player while heading the ball over the player’s back, and the ensuing DK from about (22) yards out failed as it deflected off Inter’ wall. The Dragons committed (5) fouls while Inter committed (6) fouls (including 1 offsides). Inter would take (4) shots on goal which were all unsuccessful while setting up (3) corner kick opportunities with one being successful. At about (20) minute mark, Skylar sent a cross from the Dragon’s left corner into the goal mouth where Nicholas timed his jump up and headed in a strike for Inter’s go-ahead goal, and the half ended later, 1-0, Internationals. The Dragons intensified their aggressiveness in the 2nd half, committing a whopping (15) fouls (including a YC #13/GK for crashing into an Inter player, and an unlucky YC on #21 for bleeding of the mouth and not requesting to leave the field, and 1 handball). Inter would take (3) shots on goal and (3) corner kicks while committing (8) fouls (including 1 offsides). At about the (8) minute mark, Nate H. rcvd a ball upfield from (Fabio?) and streaked past defenders into the Dragon’s goal area but was fouled in the box by a Dragons player in an attempt to tackle the ball, and a PK was awarded to Inter. Skylar sent the PK into the net to the left of the GK, and Inter held on to win, 2-0.

Region I vs. Jersey Knights Fire & YMS Xplosion

19 Apr. '08. Bad day at black rock! It was the last two games of Region I Premier today on a bright, sunny but breezy day at Kirkwood SC in New Castle, DE, and LMSC Velez, YMS Xplosion & the Internationals were all tied with identical 4-0-1 records. All Region 1 Premier teams would play a season-ending double-header today with LMSC Velez and YMS Xplosion contending while the Internationals would face the 1-4-0 Jersey team whose defense gave up (12) goals but its offense finished a respectable (7) goals in the last five matches -- not a team to be taken lightly with so much at stake with a chance for Inter to either win the Premier league in its inaugural participation or at least advance to the playoffs with a 2nd Place finish. Two weeks ago at the Icahn Stadium in Manhattan, starting-gun shots could be heard from inside the stadium where ongoing track races were being held simultaneous to the match with Manhattan Phoenix and Buffalo United on a turf field adjacent to the complex.  Today, at Kirkwood SC, real gun shots could be heard throught the day from across River Rd. at the nearby Ommelanden skeet and trap shooting range. The NJ’s defense was tenacious and aggressive, challenging the ball on every play. At about the (3) minute mark off of a counter-attack, Inter’s right side collapsed too far into the middle leaving the right flank exposed for a NJ player to run into space and receive a switched ball but it was too late by the time Seth came out to challenge the player 1v1 and the shot easily sailed past Seth into the net. Inter was on its heels at the opening bels but the defense would hold their ground for the rest of the half, allowing no further shots or corners while the NJ Knights committed (8) fouls including one offsides. Inter had its chances, shooting (3) times including a close-in shot by Brian that missed early in the first half and a corner kick which was unsuccessful while committing (6) fouls (including 1 high kick, 1 handball and 1 offsides), and the half ended, 1-0, NJ Knights. The NJ Knights kept up their intense pressuring the ball and held Inter to just one shot on goal by Patrick M. which sailed high and wide left. Although Inter held the Knights to just one shot on goal, they created (4) corner kick opportunities but all went awry while committing (9) fouls (including a YC shown to #19 for a trip on Jamie). Inter committed (7) fouls (including 2 offsides and a YC shown to Skylar for a trip), and the match ended, 1-0, NJ Knights Fire. The other match between LMSC and YMS ended a few minutes earlier in a 0-0 tie, and to at least advance into the playoffs, Inter desperately needed a Win over its friends from PAE whom it has bested just once and tied once in its many contests throughout the seasons which YMS holds the upper hand. The breezy cross wind was at Inter’s back in the first half, but Inter would not be able to capitalize with the advantage. Again at the (3) minute mark as in the first contest, Inter’s defense mis-cleared a ball away and it dropped at the feet of a YMS player about 15 yards out center who struck a hard, low shot on goal, but as Seth dropped down to clutch the ball, it slipped underneath his grasp and into the net for the go-ahead goal. Inter held YMS to just one more shot which went wide and two corner kicks which were unsuccessful. YMS played very physically, although they did not pressure/challenge the ball as tightly as did the NJ team, and they committed (12) fouls (including 1 offsides). YMS’ strong defense denied Inter from any shooting/scoring threat outside of a DK by Nat that missed wide, and one corner kick which was unsuccessful. Inter committed just two fouls and the first half ended, 1-0, YMS. In the 2nd half, at about the (3) minute mark, a ball by YMS was lofted into Inter’s goal mouth for an easy grab by Seth, but unluckily as he planted his foot into the turf to push off and move forward to catch the ball, he slipped to the turf and the ball bounced over him and rolled into the open net. Inter’s defense held YMS to just one other real shot on goal which went wide while YMS committed (10) fouls including a YC shown to #22 for a hard foul. Inter had its chances with a shot by Nate which went high and wide, and the GK easily stopped a shot by Brian from about 18 yards out to the right while Inter committed (8) fouls. In another unlucky break for Inter, a ball which was clearly last-touched by YMS rolled into Inter’s goal mouth and Seth calmly watched it go out of bounds behind the End line, however, the center official incredulously called a corner kick at about the (33) minute mark. The ball was lofted perfectly into the goal mouth about 6-8 yards out center and a melee/scrum ensued but Inter could not clear the ball away before a YMS player possessed the ball and spun-turn to fire a shot to the right of Seth into the lower corner of the net, and the match ended, 3-0, YMS.

In the other 2nd game action, our other friends from PAE, LMSC Velez, prevailed over the Jersey Knights Fire, 4-0; thus, both LMSC Velez and YMS Xplosion ended up with identical 5-0-2 records, however, by virtue of Region 1 tie-breaker rules, LMSC Velez would be awarded 1st Place South Division Champs while YMS finished in 2nd Place. Congratulations to LMSC Velez and good luck in the upcoming playoffs against the 2nd Place team from the North Division, Western United; and, good luck to YMS who will face our other friends form NYE, Hota Bavarian, winner of the North Division. Inter finished in 3rd place in the South Division while our friends from PG County, Freestate Elite, ended in 4th place.

Region I Premier vs. Freestate Elite

Posted by Alan Olson at Apr 12, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
13 Apr. '08. After a few hours rest from MD State Cup action earlier today, the Internationals matched up with their good friends form Bowie, Freestate Elite (formerly Titans), out at the MD SoccerPlex. There was a strong diagonal cross-wind but it did not significantly alter the flow of play. Like the Internationals, the Elite added several quality players over the course of the year after falling to the Internationals in Semi-Final action in last year's MD State Cup, 1-2. The first half was evenly played with both teams attacking and defending well. It was like a heavy-weight bout with both fighters capable of knocking the other out with a single blow if the other let his guard down. Both team's strong defenese held the other to no shots on goal and Freestate setup (1) corner kick opportunity which went awry while committing (6) fouls. The Internationals managed (2) corner kicks which were unsuccessful while committing (3) fouls (including 1 offsides and 1 handball), and the half ended scoreless. In the 2nd half, Inter's stingy defense kept its focus and did not allow the Elite to take a shot on goal, although it did setup (3) corner kicks which were unsuccessful while committing (5) fouls. The Internationals were held to just (2) shots on goal and (1) corner kick (which was unsuccessful) while committing (6) fouls (inclulding 1 offsides). And, at about (3) mintues into the half Freestate's guard dropped just enough when Nathaniel sent a nice cross from the right around (20) yards out which landed in the goal mouth where Brian slammed a hard shot towards goal but it deflected out right back to Brian where he turned and fired another hard left-footed shot past their GK/Kyle that found the back of the net, and the Internationals held on to pick up the W, 1-0.

Internationals Advance in MD State Cup Round 2

Posted by Alan Olson at Apr 12, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

13 Apr. '08. Out at the Harford County Polo Grounds on a mostly cloudy, windy and chill day, the Internationals matched up in Round 2 play against our NCSL friends, MSC Predators, who played Inter very strong in a close, tight match in Round 3 play last year but after trailing, 0-1, the internationals pulled out a W in the final minutes of the 2nd half, 2-1. Today's match would be much different, partly since the Internationals have added several quality players over the course of the year, while the Predators have lost several quality players. Inter's strong defense stymied the Predators in the 1st half, holding them to just a single shot on goal which went awry while committing (5) fouls. Inter would take (4) shots on goal and (2) corner kicks while committing (4) fouls. At about the (18) minute mark, Roque sent a nice cross from the left into the box where Ebo alertly possessed the ball and fired in a shot to the back of the net. At about the (34) minute mark, Nathaniel was fouled in the box which was a judgmental call that could've not been called. Ebo stepped up and fired the PK to the left side of the net past the GK, and Inter was up, 2-0, at the half. In the 2nd half, Inter's stingy defense again held the Predators to just (1) shot on goal which was unsuccessful while committing (7) fouls (including 1 hand ball). The Internationals kept up their offensive attack/counter-attacks and would shoot (8) times on goal while committing (6) fouls (including 1 offsides). At about the (15) minute mark, Nathaniel worked the ball upfield on the left and sliced a nice pass into the goal mouth to Vitalis around (18) yards out -- and V moved the ball to his right and then cut it to his left to an open crease where he fired in a hard shot to put Inter up, 3-0. At about the (20) minute mark, Fabio took a ball upfield on the left and sent a pretty pass into the goal mouth to Nathaniel who was able to work his way forward a few yards and then blasted a shot into the net for Inter's 4th goal. Around the (30) minute mark, Roque sent a nice pass into the box from the right and Nathaniel collected the ball, turned and fired a hard shot into the net, and the game ended several minutes later, 5-0, Internationals.

Region I Premier vs. Manhattan Phoenix

Posted by Alan Olson at Mar 28, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
29 Mar. '08. The Internationals made its first Away/road trip up to Manhattan, NY, in its inaugural season in Region I Premier League today. It was yet another very windy, cold but mostly sunny day in which the Internationals would contest two Region I Premier teams from NY State where the wind was a factor. In the first match, the Internationals faced the Manhattan Phoenix (NYE) in an 11AM match for the first time. Although the Phoenix had not placed in the top (4) of the NYE State Cup nor participated/finished in any notable premier tournaments, it had worked its way up from the Region I Colonial League in 2006 as Champion and into the Premier League in 2007 where it finished as Champion of the U15N division but lost in semi-final round action to PDA Larsson, winner of U15S and National Finalist. Sal C. would be at the helm while Pete was with the Cougars 90 in a Region I game back in MD. The game would be played on a nice turf field adjacent to Icahn Stadium where a track and field event was being held with starting-gun shots sounding off throughout the match. The Phoenix would not disappoint the Internationals in their level and quality of play. In the first half, the Phoenix had the wind at their backs but the first five minutes was played mostly even with both teams moving the ball up and down the field well with defenses pressuring/tackling the ball and setting up quick counter attacks. But, the Phoenix grew more confident with the wind and each penetration deep into Inter’s half of the field, and controlled play for the remainder of the half, shooting (4) times on goal. Seth made a great finger-tip save to deflect a hard shot away to his right and the other shots went wide – except one. At about the 13 minute mark, the Phoenix launched a counter-attack downfield on their left about 25 yards and switched the ball to their right to an unmarked player who collected the ball and slammed in the go-ahead goal into the right side of the net. The Phoenix would also setup (5) corner kick opportunities but were unable to finish a goal while committing (6) fouls including a YC shown to #12 for a hard foul on Fabio and sending him to the sidelines for the remainder of the half to ice and dress a small scrape/bruise to his right shin. The Phoenix came close to adding a 2nd goal when a corner kick into the goal mouth was cleared away by Skylar at the last moment on the goal line.  The Internationals were unable to mount many offensive forays into the Phoenix’s side of the field largely due to their strong defense and against the wind, and were limited to just (2) shots on goal and no corners while committing only two fouls. However, the equalizer goal would come at the (32) minute mark when Nat sent a nice pass upfield to Brian on the left about 15 yards where he was quickly challenged for the ball by two defenders but managed to dribble his way into an open crease, turned and sent the ball into the goal mouth where Nat had run into position to deftly kick in the goal, and the half ended several minutes later, 1-1. The Internationals had the wind at their backs in the 2nd half and controlled most of the play. The Phoenix play much more aggressively, committing (5) fouls including a YC shown to #7 for a hard foul and would take just (2) shots on goal, one close-in point-blank that could’ve gone in but luckily was mis-kicked left and wide of goal. Another dangerous opportunity for the Phoenix was fortunately defended in the nick of time by Jamie’s quick reaction, scrambling over to kick the ball out of harm’s way. The Internationals played with much more intensity in the 2nd half as well, committing (8) fouls including two handballs and would take (3) shots on goal and setup (2) corner kick opportunities. With the precious minutes ticking away towards the end of the match, it would seem that it would end in a draw. But, with about two minutes left in the match, Vitalis received a pass around mid-field on the left and raced upfield to the end line where he very determinedly and skillfully eluded two defenders and sent a cross into the goal mouth where Nat was once again in perfect position to strike in the game-winning goal at the 39th minute, and the match ended, 2-1, Internationals.
