Vikings Soccer is Getting Busy

Posted by Jeffrey Thompson at Jul 11, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Greetings to Players and Families:

We just completed a great week of contact days with many players showing much improvement throughout the week.  I want to thank my staff and our guest coach, John Boucavalas for making this such a productive time.  For the most part, the work ethic of the players was outstanding.

As I shared at the close of camp, we should be very busy the next several weeks. Next week is Air Show week and many hands will make light work.  We have numerous openings still available.  If you have any family or friends who can help us, please invite them to attend.  The work is pretty easy and the shift is only 6 hours or less.

The following week is contact days on Wed-Fri and then the Northmont tournament on the weekend.  The tournament will be by invitation only. Each player who is interested in playing needs to send me an email stating your interest to play.  The invitations will be going out to those players who have sacrificed their time to help at Youth Camp, Soccer Blast and the Air Show.

Lastly, I can not emphasize enough the need for every player to be doing their ball pushups, ball situps, juggling, working the ball routine, and running EVERY DAY. You must come to tryouts in the best shape of your life.

To do something GREAT in 2008 will take a TOTAL COMMITMENT from EVERY PLAYER.

For Soccer,

Coach Ric

HOW DO I GET BETTER?

Posted by Jeffrey Thompson at Jun 26, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Dear Soccer Players (and families):

I have parents and players ask me, "Coach, how can I get better?"  A great question and I have an even greater answer.....do something everyday to improve yourself.

Ball juggles, dribbling ball routine, ball situps, ball pushups, running the mile or two mile are all activities that will prepare you for our tryouts AND will make you better.

I hope that each of you are doing something every day.  See you on July 7th!

For Soccer,

Coach Ric

WILL YOU BE READY FOR TRYOUTS?

Posted by Jeffrey Thompson at Jun 17, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Hello Soccer players (and families):

As the summer gets in full gear, I encourage each of you to have a relaxing and peaceful time away from school.  I also encourage each of you to spend a little time each day getting yourself ready for the fall tryouts.  Our goal as a coaching staff is to help each of you have a very successful tryout.   The best way to do that is to make sure that you know what you can do this pre-season to help yourself.

Here are some tips:

1)   You MUST have a physical on file prior to tryouts.  You will not be able to participate without it.

2)  You should attend as many "OPTIONAL" open fields, conditioning and contact days as possible.  Please review the calendar for exact times and locations.

3)  You should purchase new cleats (if needed) in the next week to 10 days.  This will allow you plenty of time to break them in prior to tryouts.  You do not want blisters or cuts from new cleats during tryouts.

4)  You should purchase new shin pads ASAP with the NOCSAE seal.  The article below explains the new rules concerning shin pads.

“In the fall of 2008, all Ohio HS soccer players must wear shin guards that carry the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) seal.”

“This seal will show the player height range for which that particular shinguard is rated. Players found by referees to be wearing shinguards not having the NOCSAE seal, or the shinguards are not rated for the actual height of the player, will be instructed to leave the field and the coach will be shown the yellow card.”

“Be certain when purchasing new shinguards that they bear the NOCSAE seal and are rated appropriately for the height of the player. This rule applies to high school soccer only and not to club, select or recreational soccer.”

5)  You should be practicing all of the tryout expectations every week.....running the mile and 2 mile, juggling and doing ball pushups and situps.  You will only pass the expectations by doing them over and over.  They will make you better.

6)  Lastly, you should be preparing your mind and attitude for a positive season.  See yourself surpassing all of your goals.....working harder than ever before....being consistent with your preparation.....and giving your best, first time, every time.

For Soccer,

Coach Ric
