1998-99 A Record Setting Season

Posted by Martin Gleason at May 29, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Once in a great while, the opportunity arrives to do something special, that opportunity was presented to the 1998-99 Bound Brook Wrestling Team, and now that the dust settled all one can say is that the 1998-99 Bound Brook High School Wrestling Team seized that opportunity. Bound Brook’s first opportunity was to win their fourth consecutive Ridgefield Tournament, they did so by placing twelve wrestlers in the finals, reaping eight champions and setting the tournament record for most points ever scored. The next opportunity would be the school’s first county title since 1976, a mission they accomplished by the end of the semi-final round. Again, they placed twelve wrestlers in the finals and garnered seven individual championships. The team though was not just a tournament powerhouse, they also showed great dual meet prowess as they traveled to the legendary Pennsylvania District 11 for the Whitehall Zephyr Duals. The Morning Call said the Brook would see how they are a step below Pennsylvania, but in a span of seven hours and four wins later, The Morning Call ate crow. Bound Brook beat 3000 student Dieruff-Allentown High School for the title and left their coach to query “What do you feed these kids?” A memorable weekend indeed, but, more magic arrived in early February when undefeated Union County Champs Roselle Park came to a sold-out Crusader gym. In the end the Brook won on mighty efforts from some unheralded underclassmen and securing the Mountain Valley Conference Championship. The Brook continued to roll t as they won the Central Jersey Group I Title by destroying Bernards in the Championship match 59-3. Next, the Crusaders reached the Group I Finals and Chris Knapp pulled another rabbit out of his hat with seventeen seconds remaining, by pinning an elusive Belvidere Heavyweight in front of an electric and ecstatic sold out Crusader gym. In the finals the Crusaders lost in a competitive match to the Number One team in New Jersey and 14th in the Nation, Paulsboro. They concluded the dual meet season with a 23-2 record, the most wins in New Jersey. Many had thought that the Brook was tiring from all the success, but District 18 proved different. Led by upset specialist Tommy Lee, the Brook produced ten finalists, thirteen place winners, Seven Champions and another point record. As individuals, they stormed through the Region Tournament with Three Champions and Six State Qualifiers. They were led by a talented core of Seniors: Jon Rodriguez 27-2 at 130 lbs., Ken Rodriguez 31-4 at 135 lbs., Billy MacNair 24-6 at 140 lbs., Rian MacNair 29-6 at 145 lbs., Derek Michalowski 32-3 at 152 lbs. and Aleksey Sharapov 23-9 at 215 lbs. Michalowski despite a torn MCL placed sixth in the State. Key underclassman were State Qualifier Andrew Uhrlass 28-7 at 112 lbs., Brad Galeta 23-7 at 103 lbs., Adam Salamon 18-10 at 160 lbs., Rich Jannuzzi 12-2 at 171 lbs., Andrey Sharapov 18-11 at 189 lbs. and Chris “Tiny” Knapp 19-6 at 275 lbs. In the end when the Bound Brook High School Wrestling Team was ranked 10th out of 328 high schools in New Jersey. They were given an opportunity to be great and became the finest team ever in Somerset County! A special season never to be forgotten! STATISTICAL BREAKDOWN Record 23-2 Final State Ranking: 10th (328 Competing Schools) Central Jersey Group I Champions (Second in Group I) Ridgefield Holiday Tournament Champions (Most points and champions ever.) Zephyr Duals Champion Somerset County Champions (Most points and champions ever.) Mountain Valley Conference Champions District 18 Champions (Most points and champions ever.) Six State Qualifiers

Norman Cromack (1954-1959)

Posted by Martin Gleason at May 23, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Coach Cromack coached some of the greatest teams in the history of Bound Brook. He was assisted by Dr. Connerton and Mr. Schibanoff. The 1957 team was the finest dual meet team in the state beating Washington Borough, the eventual state champs, in a dual meet. Unkown to many, at that time there was the Somerset County League. In the words of a year book at the time, Bound Brook beat their "hated rival Somerville" many times to win the this title. 6 Years
