1999-2000 Another Fine Season

Posted by Martin Gleason at May 29, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The critics said the Bound Brook Wrestling team had one year of glory and then would disappear, those critics were very wrong! No doubt the Crusaders lost an outstanding Senior class in 1999, but there is no doubt that 2000 was another great season which climaxed with Bound Brook’s first multiple state place winners since 1968. The talk started before the season, the Brook is cooked! Well despite St. Peters Prep and North Bergen bragging, Bound Brook rolled out of the Ridgefield Tournament with their 5th title in a row, as six underclassman made the finals and Andrew Uhrlass was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Unfortunately, the Crusaders did not wrestle up to their potential in the Somerset County Tournament and took 2nd place behind Somerville. Next up for Bound Brook was a trip back to defend their Zephyr Duals Crown. The Crusaders had a difficult time with the tough Pennsylvania competition and had to settle for a 4th place finish in the 16 team tournament. Then the injury/flu bug hit and one starter was lost for the season and what transpired were unanticipated losses against Rahway and Jefferson. The Brook needed to get healthy fast as they fell to 6-4 and their toughest schedule stretch lay ahead. In what was one of the greatest runs in Bound Brook history, the team accumulated 13 victories in a row. Among their victims, Somerville, the Somerset County Champs, and undefeated Roselle Park team for the MVC Championship. Then a third consecutive Central Jersey Group I Championship over South River, leaving the table set for a return to the Group I State Championships at Paulsboro. Bound Brook knew their first match against Belvidere the Skyland Conference Champions, was going to be tough, but Brian Patullo’s innovative pinning technique catapulted the Crusaders to the final against undefeated number one ranked Paulsboro. After taking the first three matches the Crusaders took a turn for the worse and walked out of Paulsboro the 2nd best group I team in New Jersey. With a satisfying dual meet season behind them Bound Brook set out to defend their District 18 title. Unfortunately, the Crusaders seemed emotionally tired and again fell to Somerville for a second place finish. However, they did crown the most District Champs with Galeta, Uhrlass, Salamon, Jannuzzi and Knapp earning titles. Also Uhrlass was crowned the Outstanding Wrestler and Coach Koup was voted District 18 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. In Region 5 competition Uhrlass captured a title, Knapp took 2nd, Galeta a 3rd and Salamon a 4th. Jannuzzi fell victim to a lateral drop in the quarter-finals, or could have gone far. Finally, Chris Knapp and Andrew Uhrlass traveled to the Meadowlands for the State Tournament and each impressed the big crowds with their performances. Uhrlass, who two college coaches called the most technically superior wrestler in the tournament, took a third place, while eighth seed Chris Knapp shocked the crowd by pinning the number one and five seeds to proceed to the finals and a second place finish. At the end of the weekend, Bound Brook showed itself as one of the better wrestling programs in New Jersey, and with eleven starters returning for next season, the Crusaders don’t seem to be planning on losing that status anytime soon. Great job Guys! STATISTICAL BREAKDOWN Record: 19-5 Final Ranking in Region 5: 5th Central Jersey Group I Champions (Second in Group I) Ridgefield Holiday Tournament Champions 4th Zephyr Duals 2nd Somerset County Mountain Valley Conference Champions 2nd District 18 Three State Qualifiers , two State place winners

2002-03 A Seed Begins To Grow

Posted by Martin Gleason at May 29, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
2002-03 BB WRESTLING RECAP Last season the question was posed as to whether a seed had been planted or would the Bound Brook High School wrestling team begin to fall after years of prominence. The answer to the question seems to have been answered and that seed that was planted a year ago is maturing into a healthy sapling as the 2002-03 Bound Brook High School team finished 14-8 and were crowned the Central Jersey Group I Champions. The coaches decided to start this season in a more difficult fashion, so they entered the team in the Southern Regional Tournament. Although, Bound Brook was the smallest school in the tournament, Andrew Flanagan placed second and David Shubick third while five other wrestlers made it to the top six in their weight. This is impressive considering that this was a twenty-one team tournament. Next up was the the 27th Annual Somerset County Wrestling Tournament, and despite the loss of Shubick and Jason Gregor, the team mustered a fifth place finish. Andrew Flanagan coasted to his second county title and John Jannuzzi made his first finals. Place winners included Jesse Harrington and Kevin Shivers who took home third place finishes, and Jaime Martinez who placed fourth. When the dual meet season started the Brook had yet to have their full line up, as Flanagan was out with a knee injury and Jose Abarca had yet to take to the mat. The team lost some tough matches early, but were able to defeat the teams they were clearly better than. However, the coaches were not satisfied as only late minute heroics by the team's lone senior Jason Gregor were able to put the team over New Providence. Than bad losses to Roselle Park and Somerville had the coaches concerned that this team was not growing and getting tough. However, shortly after these losses, the Crusaders hit their stride, first they defeated a good Belivdere team and then delivered Bound Brook it's 500th win in the history of the high school. BBHS is only the 8th school to win 500 matches in the history of New Jersey, and the team and their red room of torture was featured on Channel 12 News New Jersey. The team kept rolling and traveled to Point Pleasant Beach and beat a 14-2 team by a 14 points. The next day, Steven Bradley displayed the Crusaders awesome conditioning, when he defeated a Middlesex wrestler in overtime to assure Bound Brook another victory. The next week the Crusaders stormed to the Group I Central Jersey State Championship with an easy victory over South River. The finals match was special for Coach Koupiaris as he earned his 200th career victory. However, the next day a drubbing by Paulsboro in the State Group I State Championships, showed the Crusaders that there is much work to be done as a team. The final part of team competition is the District 18 wrestling tournament which has been the most disappointing part of Bound Brook¹s season the previous two years. However, the Crusaders had a solid tournament placing third and bringing home three individual District champs. The winners were Jesse Harrington, John Jannuzzi and Andrew Flanagan. Harrington is only the second freshman to win a District title for Bound Brook and both Jannuzzi and Flanagan pinned in the finals. Jaime Martinez made his firstfinals appearance and Kevin Shivers, Jose Abarca and Chris Dobrzanski qualified for Regions with third place finishes. David Shubick, Jason Gregor and Mike Roberts placed fourth. The young Bound Brook wrestlers put on a good display the next week at the Region 5 tournament at Hunterdon Central. Andrew Flanagan became the first BBHS sophomore to ever win a Region title, and Jesse Harrington became on the second BBHS freshman to place in the Region. Both he and John Jannuzzi placed fourth, only one place away from qualification for the State Championships. Although wrestling in the toughest weight at the State Championships, Flanagan placed 5th in the state for the second consecutive year. He avenged an early season loss to Jamie Lijo of Hopactong. His weight class included two State Champs, two fourths and two place winners from 2002. He finished with a 36-4 record, the most wins ever by a Bound Brook sophomore. The 2002-03 season can certainly be called a next step for the Bound Brook wrestlers as only one member of the team will be lost and quality group of 8th graders will be ready to take to the mats in 2003-04. Wrestlers like Jaime Martinez, Chris Dobrzanski and Steve Bradley had breakthrough seasons, while David Shubick, Jesse Harrington, John Jannuzzi and Andrew Flanagan all showed there great ability. Finally, Kevin Shivers, Jose Abarca, Mike Roberts and Rich Perry wrestled like kids who will win 20 matches each in their junior years. Finally, Rob Pikulin and Jay Makowsksi, Chris Konysz, Dave Charnuska, Jimmy Lee and Bill Vivona could improve great from this year to next season. In the end, the Bound Brook High School team has begun to grow tree and one cannot wait to see the fruit this tree will bare during the 2003-04 season. Let¹s all sit back and see who wants to take the next step in the wrestling careers. STATISTICAL BREAKDOWN FOR 2002-03 Record: 14-8 Program Record 504-287-6 (632% Winning Percentage) 5th in Somerset County with one Champion Central Jersey Group I Champions 3rd District 18 with three Champions Three Region Place winners with one Champion One State place winner
