Close loss gives Bound Brook hope Published in the Courier News on January 16, 2003 By HARRY FREZZA JR. Staff Writer BOUND BROOK - The Bound Brook High School wrestling team is young enough to be given a pass for Wednesday night's near-miss against Rahway. The Crusaders' thrilling 41-32 loss was definitely encouraging and had Rahway head coach Fred Stueber praising them. Though assistant coach Marty Gleason was very pleased by taking seven of the 12 bouts that were wrestled -- Bound Brook forfeited at 103 and 189 -- he also looked at is as an opportunity missed. Rahway improved to 4-0, while Bound Brook dropped to 3-2 with another unbeaten team -- 5-0 Voorhees -- visiting tonight. Bound Brook has only one senior in its lineup, 135-pounder Jason Gregor, so the future should be bright. "We're looking at this as a two-year journey," Gleason said. "We're looking at 2004, but we're driving ahead. The kids for the most part stayed with the plan tonight." The big moment for Bound Brook came at 275 pounds where sophomore Richie Perry, who came into the match with an 0-6 record, pinned Darnell Butler to give the home team a 32-30 lead. The Crusaders had won just two bouts from 189 through 275 in their first four dual meets, giving up 54 points. "Richie loves wrestling and is really working hard at it," Gleason said. "The kid weighed 305 pounds at one point and now he's at 243. He's really working to get better." Bound Brook didn't quite have enough margin after Perry's pin. Bound Brook forfeited to outstanding freshman 103-pounder Darian Caldwell and freshman 112-pounder Ed McCray scored a technical fall win over sophomore Jose Abarca to close out the Rahway victory. Bound Brook had leads of 11-9, 17-9 and 26-12, but Gleason knew that 103 and 112 would be a problem. The victory was clinched when freshman Ed McCray scored a technical fall over Bound Brook sophomore Jose Abarca at 112 pounds, the final bout of the night. "We were hoping to get pins and points early and often," Gleason said. The Crusaders built their lead behind freshman Jesse Harrington's technical fall at 119 that started the match. Junior David Shubick won by fall before Rahway's Carlos Nicasio and Marlon Zuniga closed the Bound Brook lead to 11-9 with a decision and fall at 130 and 135, respectively. Bound Brook countered with a second-period fall by sophomore Andrew Flanagan at 140 and junior 145-pounder Steve Bradley won 9-2 to boost the lead to 20-9. Bound Brook's biggest lead came after sophomore John Jannuzzi won by fall at 160 to make it 26-12. "Bound Brook really came after us and we really went after them, it was like a collision," Stueber said. "They had some momentum and really took us apart. They're twice as good as they were a week ago." Senior 171 pounder Mike Rodriguez and 135-pounder Marlon Zuniga had key falls for Rahway. Adam Rojas gave Rahway its first lead of the night at 30-26 when he pinned freshman Jay Makowski in just 30 seconds at 215. Wrestling: Rahway wins classic at Bound Brook Published in the Home News Tribune 01/16/03 By HARRY FREZZA JR. STAFF WRITER BOUND BROOK -- Fred Stueber is in his final year as head coach of the Rahway High School wrestling team and enjoying every minute of it. Next year, the longtime head coach will hand the reins over to his assistant Tony Reinoso, but it's likely that Stueber won't be too far away. He won't want to miss the kind of matches his Indians and Bound Brook put on last night. Rahway rallied from deficits of 11-9, 17-9 and 26-12 to win 41-32. The victory was clinched when Ed McCray scored a technical fall over Bound Brook sophomore Jose Abarca at 112 pounds, the final bout of the night. "I tell you what, somebody came up to me after the match and said that if you put somebody from Europe in this place in the middle of this match and they didn't know what they were watching, they wouldn't miss another one," said Stueber, whose team improved to 4-0. Bound Brook got a big win from sophomore 275-pounder Richie Perry, who came into the match with an 0-6 record. Perry pinned Darnell Butler to give Bound Brook a 32-30 advantage. But Rahway got a forfeit win from outstanding freshman Darian Caldwell and McCrea followed at 112 with his technical fall to close it out. "Bound Brook really came after us and we really went after them, it was like a collision," Stueber said. "They had some momentum and really took us apart. They're twice as good as they were a week ago." Senior 171-pounder Mike Rodriguez and 135-pounder Marlon Zuniga had key falls for Rahway. Adam Rojas gave Rahway its first lead of the night at 30-26 when he pinned freshman Jay Makowski in just 30 seconds at 215.

BOUND BROOK WINS SHORE SUMMER DUALS Although the Bound Brook Wrestling team will be young this season, they showed that the future is bright by winning the Jersey Shore Duals at the end of June. The Crusaders finished first among twelve teams with the week culminating in a victory over Belleville for the Championship. Other teams the Crusaders defeated included North Bergen, Old Bridge, Red Bank and Matawan. The team was comprised of one senior, two juniors, six sophomores and three eighth graders. Top wrestlers included John Jannuzzi (5-1), Nick Murray (8-1) Dave Shubick (7-1), Jason Gregor (8-1), Andrew Flanagan (8-0), Steve Bradley (4-2) and Kevin Shivers (4-2). An individual tournament was held on the final night of competition and although only five Crusader wrestlers competed, four won individual titles. First place wrestlers included Bound Brook¹s newest resident Nick Murray, Dave Shubick, Andrew Flanagan and Jason Gregor. Jason was sharp on the final evening with cradles which cut down his opponents like knife through butter. He pinned his finals opponent in a minute, giving his coach new ideas in motivating him. Nick Murray, an 8th grader, also impressive as he defeated a district place winner Brian Sims. Dave Shubick destroyed all of his opponents and Flanagan beat a state qualifier in the finals. GALETA AND FLANAGAN PARTICIPATE AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS In the past three years Bound Brook has had three wrestlers attain All-American status in the Olympic styles of wrestling. Chris Knapp did so in freestyle in 2000, and Aleksey and Andrey Sharapov did the same in Greco Roman in 1999. This year Brad Galeta and Andrew Flanagan attempted that feat, but unfortunately both wrestlers came up short. The Aasics National Championships is the largest and toughest wrestling tournament in the world. A wrestler must place in the top three of his state qualifying tournament in order to compete. Brad qualified by placing 2nd in the Junior State Freestyle Championships, and Andrew won the Cadet State Championships. Brad wrestled at 130 in the Junior division and finished with a 4-2 record. He started strong with wins over Jason Gaston of Missouri, Justin Dwork(not dork) of Massachusetts and Wes Cusar of Pennsylvania. On day two Brad suffered his first defeat to USA Today Wrestler of the Year, and the only 4x California State Champion in history Darrell Vasquez. However, he rebounded with a win against Kent Nathe of Minnesota. In his final match against Matt Stuart of New York, Brad had built a 5-1 lead, but was caught and pinned. This eliminated him from the competition. Although Brad did not attain All-American status, he did finish in the top 20 in a weight class comprised of 108 wrestlers. Andrew Flanagan participated in the 140 division of the Cadet division and also finished with a winning record of 3-2. In his opening match he defeated Bobby Conn of Missouri and then lost to New York State runner-up Trevor Chinn 8-3. Andrew then rebounded by pinning Mike Miller of Kansas. Day two for Andrew had him defeat Eli Hunter of Maryland and then he was eliminated in a 8-6 loss to Virginia State Champion Hunter Davenport. His weight was won by Mitch Smith of West Virginia, who is also a sophomore in high school. Although both wrestlers fell short of All American status, each gave their best in the toughest and largest tournament in the world. Congratulations Brad and Andrew. WRESTLERS PREPARE FOR KEN CHERTOW CAMP Numerous Bound Brook wrestlers will participate in the Ken Chertow Gold Medal Wrestling Camp the week August 4th to August 10th at the Days Inn Hotel and Conference Center in beautiful Allentown, Pennsylvania. Chertow¹s camp is the only year round wrestling camp and is led by Ken Chertow who was a National Champion at Penn State, and participated the 1988 Olympics in freestyle wrestling. BOUND BROOK SHUT OUT AT OLD BRIDGE DUALS Although the Bound Brook Wrestling Team won the Shore Summer Duals, the team went from first to worst at the Old Bridge Summer Duals. However, the Crusaders wrestled with few of the same wrestlers who competed on the Shore Summer Team due to various individual commitments. Twenty-two teams attended the duals. Bound Brook lost to Howell, Sayreville/North Brunswick, East Brunswick, St. John Vianny, J.P. Stevens, Edison, Rahway and Woodbridge. Although the team lost every match they were extremely young and forfeited four weights. The team was comprised of two 8th graders, three 9th graders, three 10th graders and two 11th graders. Two wrestlers, Jaime Martinez and Nick Murray, each finished with perfect 8-0 records. Martinez¹ best win was tough win against East Brunswick¹s Tim Ackerman and Murray¹s was fall against Region 4th placer Corey Ritchings of East Brunswick. David Shubick also finished with a winning 5-3 record on the week, which included a win against Region 2nd place finisher Jay Ucci of Howell. Other wrestlers with multiple wins included Chris Doberzanski and Bill Vivona. SHUBICK, GLEASON, FLANAGAN AND MURRAY PLACE AT OLD BRIDGE WRESTLING FESTIVAL The Summer wrestling extravaganza called the Old Bridge Wrestling Festival, spans two weeks and features all types of wrestling. In week one, Andrew Flanagan placed third in open freestyle and second in high school freestyle. Nick Murray won the Junior High freestyle. Week two saw Gabe Gleason and David Shubick place second in their respective folkstyle divisions, while Nick Murray placed third in the high school scholastic division. WRESTLERS PLACE AT JEFFERSON TOURNAMENT The Bound Brook Wrestlers traveled to Jefferson High School the last week of June to participate in their annual off-season tournament. Wrestlers who competed included Rob Pikulin, John Jannuzzi, Steve Bradley, Jason Gregor, Andrew Flanagan, Nick Murray, Kevin Shivers and Billy Vivona. Medalists included two third placers with Nick Murray and John Jannuzzi. Jason Gregor placed third while Andrew Flanagan won his weight class. Steve Bradley placed 5th in the same weight class. After the day of wrestling was complete, the team headed north on Route 15 to the Mountain Creek Water Park. They enjoyed multiple pools, slides and tube rides as the perfect way to complete a summer day on the mats. FLANAGAN GOES UNDEFEATED AT CADET DUALS Andrew Flanagan participated in the National Cadet Duals in Greeley, Colorado on July 4th weekend and was one of two Team New Jersey wrestlers to finish with a perfect 8-0 record. His victories included a 5-4 win over Danny Garter of Kansas who recently placed fourth in the Aasics National Championships in freestyle and won the title in Greco Roman. He also defeated Washington State Champion Kyle Bounds by a 6-0 score. Bounds was second to Garter in Greco Roman National Championships. He defeated all others by fall, including wrestlers from Michigan, Iowa and Indiana. ALUMNI COMPETE AT OLD BRIDGE WRESTLING OFFICE Numerous Crusader College Wrestlers competed in the Annual Old Bridge Wrestling Festival. Day one of the festival was an open freestyle tournament and Alumni Derek Michalowski and Ken Rodriguez won titles. Michalowski reeked havoc by defeating Sal Iodaci by tech fall in the first round, and leaving some poor kid for dead in the second round. He finished by defeating Rutgers Scott McAdoo in the finals. A second place finish was turned in by Carson Newman heavyweight, Celester O¹Garro. He lost to National Qualifier and Rutgers Graduate Ricardo Romero 10-4 in the finals. Big Les hit a huge headlock but was unable to get the fall. Jon Rodriguez placed second, as he ran into a Russian greco roman specialist in the semi-finals, while Andrew Flanagan beat a 28 year old combatant for his third place medal. GALETA WRESTLES AT JUNIOR NATIONAL DUALS Brad Galeta recently competed at the National Junior Duals in Edmund, Oklahoma. Brad finished with a 3-2 record. Brad was selected for the team by the way of his 2nd place finish at the freestyle state championships and wrestled at 125. The tournament offered Brad a useful tune-up for the National Championships. GLEASON PLACES SECOND AT BAYSHORE Gabe Gleason recently placed 2nd at the the Bayshore Classic.
