Nestor Taffur-Boston University

Graduated

2x NWCA Academic All American and NCAA DI Round of 12

After a great senior season Nestor accepted a full scholarship to Boston University and  wrestled 149 for the Terriers as freshman. He completed the season with a 13-14 record and was named CAA Rookie of the Week twice during the season. He returned to 149 for his sophomore year and finished the year with a 24-15 record and 6th place finish at the CAA's.

At BBHS, Nestor made great progress every year as he didn't even qualify for the Middle School States going into high school. But after a 4th place District finish his freshman year, he won three District titles, placed in Regions twice and then won Region 5 his senior year. He then capped off his senior year with a 4th place finish in the State tournament and is third on Bound Brook's all time win list.

2008-09 CRUSADERS SNEAK IN WINNING RECORD

Posted by Martin Gleason at Apr 19, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

CRUSADERS SNEAK IN WINNING SEASON IN FRANEY’S FIRST SEASON

CAMPOLATTANO WINS SECOND STATE TITLE AND TAFFUR PLACES FOURTH IN STATE

2008-09 Team Record (16-14)

During the lead-up to the 2007-08 season the Bound Brook Crusader wrestlers had a tough break when Kyle Doerr was lost to a knee injury. Well,  the lead-up 2008-09 season was deju vu all over again as the Crusaders again began the season short handed when Kyle reinjured his knee and it was learned that State Qualifier Gabe Gleason would be competing on broken hip. Was this an omen that Coach Kyle Franey’s first season as Bound Brook’s head coach would be like last season? Well yes, but unlike the popular 70’s movie not all omens are bad and the 2008-09 Crusader wrestling continued some very positive trends this season such as:

-The team sweeping the year end quad to finish the season with a winning record.

-The team having at least one region champ for the 10th time in eleven years.

-The team having a State finalist for the 8th time in the last ten years.

-The team having at least one State place-winner for the eleventh year in a row.

-Placing in the top five in the County for the 13th straight year, with eleven of those years being a top three finish.

-The team placing in the top three of the District for 12th time in 13 years.

As in the past three years, the Crusaders started their season in scenic Dagsboro, Delaware at the Battle of the Beach wrestling tournament and although the team only placed 6th out of the 21 teams competing, they did have three outstanding performances as Gabe Gleason, Nestor Taffur and Andrew Campolattano all won individual titles.  Camp was further recognized as the Outstanding Wrestler as he dismantled a Pennsylvania State place-winner in his final. It was the third time in the four years of the tournament that a Bound Brook wrestler was named most outstanding.

A few days later the Crusaders started their dual meet season on a exciting note by defeating Voorhees, with the highlight being senior Gabe Gleason becoming the Crusader’s fourth 100 win wrestler. A feat Nestor Taffur would match later in the season.

Unfortunately, the dual meet season became a bit rough after that as the Crusaders were missing six of their eventual starters and struggled to stay competitive and consistent. In a quad after Christmas the Crusaders showed these vulnerabilities as they lost all three matches, including a criteria lost to Nottingham on most falls/forfeits.

Next, the Crusaders took their annual trip to the Whitehall Duals in Pennsylvania with low expectations. However, the team wrestled more consistently and competitively then the week before and ended 2-2 on the day with wins against Milton and Bangor, while losing a heartbreaker to Elizabethtown and a competitive match against Northwestern Lehigh.

After that point, the Crusaders had a great break as two seasoned wrestlers from the youth program Ricky Ash and Frank Gianotti joined the team. Although both took time to get up to full speed they both contributed to the team’s success in a huge way. Right of the bat, they helped the Crusaders stay competitive against Montgomery in a 39-37 home loss.

Next up the Crusaders went to Madison for a tri-meet against the host and Westfield high school and although the coaches hoped to win both matches it was a 50/50 day. In other words, we only showed up for 50% of the matches that day. Against Madison, Ben Bentavegna delivered a match ending pin to deliver a close victory for the Brook, but then the team was just plain non-competitive against a undefeated Westfield team. The only highlights of the Westfield match was Nestor Taffur’s 100th win by fall and some darn good pizza supplied by our host Madison High School.

After a record padding victory against Johnson Regional where Frank Gianotti boarded the winner’s train for the first time with a pin, the Crusaders hosted their biggest rival Somerville. And well you know what happened… We got killed again, as the match was a nightmare and Gabe Gleason was lost to sickness. It was at this point the coaches wondered: “Where do we go from here?”

Well the answer to that question would be Hillsborough High School and the Somerset County Wrestling Tournament, which the coaches did not look forward too as Gleason was out indefinitely and our heavyweight quit. But you know tough times sometimes get student athletes to give a little extra and the Crusaders did that in the County tournament placing ahead of Somerville and right behind Montgomery in fourth place. The winners were highlighted by senior Henry Shapiro who won his first County title, while Nestor Taffur won his third title and Campolattano his second. But two other valuable performances were offered by Ricky Ash who placed third and Kenny Taffur took fourth as our new and improved heavyweight starter.

The next week the Crusaders faced their other rival Middlesex and State powerhouse South Plainfield and were again missing four starters. But against Middlesex the Crusaders wrestled well as Ken Taffur and Ricky Ash continued their winning ways. Frank Gianotti gave his all in a loss to a good Middlesex opponent and the Crusaders held on for the victory against their rival to extend their winning streak against Middlesex to fifteen years straight.

Unfortunately, the Brook seemed to lay down against a tough South Plainfield squad and only Nestor Taffur and Camp were winners. The highlight was Nestor defeating South Plainfield State place winner Nick Vallone up a weight at 152 and then being called a scumbag with no one of authority seeming to mind.

After this point the Crusaders started to see some starters re-enter the line-up but it didn’t seem to matter as the Crusaders lost one-sided matches to their divisional opponents Del Val, North Warren and Hackettstown. In each match there might have been one highlight against a sea of misery. But the real highlight was the food offered by Bound Brook’s wrestling parents at the concession stand which included empanadas, ziti and sloppy joe.  Delicious yes, but not what you want to consider the highlight of a day on the wrestling mats.

The Crusaders now had a miserable 7-12 record, but a line-up that should be coming together, and finally that started to happen with three conference wins against Manville, North Plainfield and Bernards. Then the Crusaders faced the eventual Group 4 State Champions Brick Memorial and lost by a respectable 42-33 score.

Although the Crusaders did not lose to a group I school all season, the quality of their schedule prevented them from qualifying for the State Playoffs, so instead they scheduled six matches the last week of the season and really started to show improvement.

First up was Bergenfield, who brought an impressive 215 wrestler for Camp  to tangle with and the Crusaders won on all fronts as they won the match and Camp gutted out tough 5-3 win.

Then after the only poor outing of the week which was a lackadaisical loss to Sayreville, the Crusaders defeated Pascack Hills. The highlights of that match included a major decision of a Region Champ by Nestor Taffur.

Finally, the regular season ended with a quad against host Toms River North, Shore Regional and Manchester Township. The Crusaders for the first time all season stayed competitive in all three matches and Gary Sensasoupha delivered a match ending victory to help the Crusaders upset TR-North who was the 7th ranked team in the vaunted Shore area.

With that victory the Crusaders finished the season with 16-14 record and although there was a lot of discouraging moments for Coach Franey in his first season, it felt good to go back to his old conference and wrestle tough.

But Bound Brook’s ability to peak for the post-season has been common-place the last ten years, and this season proved no different as the Crusaders kept things rolling as they entered the District 18 Tournament as the team placed 2nd behind Hillsborough and ahead of Montgomery and had the most individual Champions lead by Ricky Ash. That’s right, the kid who placed third in the County continued to improve and won the title out of the third seed as he used his own unique brand of wrestling which basically consists of throws and funk and which make him exciting to watch.

And although Gleason and Campolattano looked great in victory, the best finals performance was offered by Nestor Taffur who redeemed himself after 365 days of agony and beat New Jersey State place winner Colin Hewitt by a 5-3 score and earning the Outstanding Wrestler Award. Other placewinners included runner-up Ken Taffur,  third place finishes by Henry Shapir and Oleem O’Garro and a fourth place finish by Ben Bentavegna.

Seven Crusaders moved on to the Region 5 tournament, but only three would make it out successfully as Andrew Campolattano won his second title, Nestor Taffur again defeated  Hewitt for his first Region title, and Gleason placed third for the second consecutive year to qualify for the State tournament in Atlantic City.

At the State tournament the first night saw the elimination of Gleason, but Taffur and Campolattano moved on in convincing fashion, as Taffur scored a major decision against Ethan Orr of High Point and Camp pinned Evan Dill of Watchung Hills in a minute.

On Saturday, Taffur let his guard down with 4 seconds left in his quarter final gave up a match tying take down against CJ Cobb of Williamstown, which Cobb then won in overtime. Camp meanwhile tech falled Leon White of St. Augustine to move into the semi-finals. In those semis Camp faced his State final opponent from the year before Jon Becker and controlled the match with 5-0 lead when Becker could not continue. With that Andrew moved to finals and a match with the 2007 189 lbs. State Champion Mac Mancuso.

Nestor meanwhile did diligent work in the losers bracket by pinning Frank Crocco of Passaic Valley by 14-3 major decision, pinning Cody Spatz of Burlington Township and then beating Colin Hewitt one last time by a 11-3 score. All these wins gave Nest the right to wrestle for third on Sunday morning. In that match he faced off against Jon Robertson of Long Branch and in what was thought going to be a high scoring match turned into a chess match which Robertson won on a bad shot by Taffur in overtime by a 3-1 score.

Andrew Campolattano meanwhile later that day had a date with history as either he or Mancuso was to become a two-time New Jersey State Champion, and would Camp begin his first two years of high school with a undefeated wrestler. Well although Camp’s top and bottom weren’t his friend in the final, his takedown attack was and he defeated Mancuso to win his second State Championship and to become Bound Brook’s 16th State Champion and 15th State place winner in the last ten years.              Not bad, not bad at all! For these accomplishments Andrew was named the Star Ledger Wrestler of the Year.

WHO IS MIKE SCHIBANOFF?

He is the “Dean of New Jersey Wrestling Officials,” but he is a massive man. He was the first “Chief Referee” in New Jersey, but he was very genial. Along the way, He also established himself as one of New Jersey’s greatest wrestling coaches.

Mr. Schibanoff was born and raised in Freehold, New Jersey, where Today, there still exists a Schibanoff Road. He graduated from Freehold High School where he competed in the New Jersey State Tournament at Heavyweight in 1937. He furthered his education by earning a B.A. degree at Moravian College and his M.A. from Columbia University. Mike participated in football, track and of course, wrestling.

Mr. Schibanoff is the man responsible for organizing officials and bringing about a unified approach to officiating throughout the state of New Jersey. He was elected as the first President of the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association.

One of Mike’s strongest attributes as a referee was his consummate professionalism. When a crowd disagreed with one of Mike’s calls, he wouldn’t frown, but rather just give the crowd a polite smile. He knew his role was oversee the action and not be the center of attention.

Time and time again in trying to serve the sport, He handled meets in the early days for nothing, just trying to further wrestling in its infancy in New Jersey. He handled countless numbers of rule interpretation meetings and served selflessly in getting officials for new schools. He earned respect of others in wrestling and  was an integral part of running the N.J.S.I.A.A. State Wrestling Championships.

This “Like for Mike” resulted in his designation as the N.J.S.I.A.A. Rules Interpreter from 1962 to 1979. Mike’s influence, however, went beyond New Jersey, as he was a member of the National Rules Advisory Committee and National Rules Committee for wrestling. He was member of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association for thirty-one years and long standing member of the New Jersey Football Officials Association.

One of Mike’s contributions to the National Rules Federation was the assembly of the National Federation of Wrestling Officials Rules Manual. If one looks closely at the 1979-80 Manual they will find technical pictures of wrestlers and referees in the Bound Brook High School Gymnasium, including NCAA All-American Peter Schuyler.  Mike was also on the technical staff of the wrestling film “Ready Wrestle.”

Although there is no other man who inspired more confidence among other officials then Mike Schibanoff, he was also an outstanding wrestling coach. Mike established the Bound Brook High School wrestling program into a state power in the 50’s and 60’s, when He and Dr. James Connerton convinced the Bound Brook Board of Education to restart the wrestling program after World War II. Mike’s team within five years had recorded two undefeated seasons and were  state runner-ups in 1951.

Although He had extensive duties as referee, He continued to coach Bound Brook either as the head coach or assistant for 13 years. During this time Bound Brook produced an impressive dual meet record of 95 wins and 23 losses 2 ties, had 40 District Champions, 34 State Place winners and 10 State Champions. Other accomplishments included the legendary 1957 team that was undefeated, five Somerset County Championships, four District titles and four undefeated teams.

Some of the individuals Mike helped coach during this period included 1953 State Heavyweight Champion Mike Sandusky who was an All-American at the University of Maryland in three sports and later played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. He also helped Coach two time State Champion Joe Zelasney, who in 1960 defeated two returning State Champions on his way to being named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Mike was also instrumental in the development of State Runner-Up Bob Mizerek who has since been inducted into the Rutgers-Newark and Montclair State College Athletic Hall of Fames.

Mr. Schibanoff also coached the football team at Bound Brook for eight years and the track team for 25 years. During this period, He had his most fulfilling moment as a coach when his   son  Jim won an individual Track State Title. Mike finished his career at Bound Brook High School as it’s Athletic Director in June of 1980.

Mike retired to Marina Del Mar, California with his wife Mary, who was a second grade teacher in the Bound Brook School District for twenty-seven years. Today, the Schibanoff’s beam when they speak about their two children. Their daughter Susan holds a Ph.D in English and is an Associate Professor of Medieval English at the University of New Hampshire. Their son James is a Doctor of Respiratory Diseases at the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, California. Mike has enjoyed retirement by fishing, reading, listening to classical music and performing  auto and home repairs. He is still an avid fan of New Jersey Wrestling and is known to wake up early in the California Morning to follow the scores in New Jersey via the internet. He still returns to New Jersey every year for the State Wrestling Championships as a judge and weigh master.

Mr. Schibanoff has been honored for his contribution in both his community and on the state level. In May of 2000 the Bound Brook School District dedicated the wrestling room in his honor. On the state level Mike was awarded the Harry E. Lake Award for contributions to New Jersey Wrestling and Mirshack Award for excellence in officiating.

There is no other man who inspired more confidence among New Jersey wrestling officials than Mike Schibanoff. He also had monumental impact on the youth of Bound Brook.

His inspiration and impact is a result of him being a very warm hearted and encouraging person.

In the History of New Jersey Wrestling Book, Mike Schibanoff will be remembered as one of the outstanding contributors to wrestling in New Jersey. His efforts will never be forgotten as He has had an tremendous impact on the growth and development of our great sport.

A FINAL TRIBUTE TO COACH:

Coach Mike Schibanoff, the Father of Bound Brook Wrestling and namesake of our wrestling room passed away Sunday, February 22, 2009 in California at the age of 91.
Mr. Schibanoff began as a gym teacher at Bound Brook High and in 1948  he and Dr. James Connerton approached the Board of Education to restart the wrestling program that had just begun before World War 2. The school board approved the program and Bound Brook wrestled their first full schedule in 1949 under Coach Schib and Dr. Connerton.
Although Mr. Schib was only a co-head coach for a few years, he worked with the program as an assistant or head coach until 1962. In his time as head coach his teams had a record of 49-14-2 and won multiple District and County Championships. He was instrumental in hiring some great Bound Brook coaches such as Norm Cromack and Bob Zarbatany.
During all of this time Mr. Schib was New Jersey's top referee  and was the head of the Section I National Federation Rules Committee. In fact, if you were to look in a Wrestling Rule Book from the late 1970's you will see pictures of different situations taken in the Bound Brook gymnasium and featuring future All-American Pete Schyuler.
Wrestling was not the only sport he coached at BBHS, as he was also the track and football coach.
His own children also brought great distinction to Bound Brook as his son was a State Champion in the hurdles for BBHS and  is a doctor in San Diego, California. His beloved daughter  Susan is a english professor Emeriti at the University of New Hampshire.
Not to be forgotten, his wife Mary was a second grade teacher in the Bound Brook school system. She was a great teacher and taught Bound Brook wrestlers like Pete Schyuler and your's truly. I love Mrs. Schib because she let me do my school work in the spacious coat closet and always understood what it was like to be the youngest child from a large tribe. You always felt the love and compassion of a mother when taught by Mrs. Schib.
Later in his career Mr. Schib went from gym teacher to athletic director at Bound Brook High School. but he always helped recruit wrestlers such as former Bound Brook greats future Hall of Famer like Bob Mizerek. He retired from the school district in 1980 and moved to Del Mar, California.
In Californial he loved to fish and be with his family. But in the Winter he'd wake up every morning to go online to see how his beloved Bound Brook wrestling team was doing. If he couldn't find a score, he'd call New Jersey to see how the kids did and often would request video of the new Bound Brook stars. I fondly recall when he called just to know what the move Andrew Flanagan was hitting from the collar tie which made kids go flying backwards.
He always gave great advice and let you know why others succeeded and things you might want to change. I asked him what was Henry Boresch's secret to coaching and he told me it was quantity. He said Coach Boresch always made sure his kids wrestled more than any other kids in the State and that's what made a basketball player turned wrestling coach successful.
Mr. Schib atttended the State Tournament until about the year 2000 when flying became a little difficult for him. But he was always honored by being a judge for the outstanding wrestler award and handed out some of the awards before the start of the final round.
He is survived by his wife Mary and children Dr. James Schibanoff and Susan Schibanoff, Ph.D.

Bound Brook Wrestling Thanks Coach Schibanoff for the wonderful tradition and service he gave to the community of Bound Brook and he will always be loved and remebered in our 1.7 mile town we call home! Rest in Peace Coach.
