HHS OPENS DISTRICT TOURNAMENT WITH 1-0 WIN OVER STATION CAMP
HENDERSONVILLE Hendersonville High senior Will Wacaser had a case of nerves.
However, his performance on Friday evening left Station Camp unsettled.
Wacaser outdueled Station Camp junior Thomas Zazzaro, pitching a complete-game shutout in the Commandos’ 1-0 victory in the two teams’ District 9-AAA Tournament opener at Drakes Creek Park.
“I was nervous coming out,” Wacaser said. “I did not expect that. I got that first strikeout, and I turned to (senior second baseman) Jon Swindle and said, ‘I’m nervous.’”
Wacaser (7-1) allowed four hits, issued one base on balls and struck out 13 hitters. The Austin Peay State University signee retired 14 of the final 15 hitters that he faced.
“My velocity felt good,” Wacaser said. “My command was on. It was just a good night.”
Hendersonville senior rightfielder Ian MacMaster helped out, throwing Bison senior Lucas Gross – who was attempting to score from second base on Austin Valentine’s third-inning single – out at home plate.
“We had a chance to take the lead,” Station Camp head coach Korey Heppeard said. “(MacMaster) made a great throw, great catch (by senior catcher Cooper Brenning). You had to make them do it.”
Zazzaro (1-4) also went the distance, scattering six hits. The right-hander issued two base on balls and struck out three hitters.
The game’s only run scored in the third inning. With runners at first and third base and two outs, Commando senior Andrew Larson broke toward second base on the pitch to home plate, and Bison junior catcher Dylan Pottorff threw to second base. Larson worked his way into a rundown, allowing sophomore Austin Mays to score before Larson was tagged out.
Wacaser allowed just one more baserunner.
“He Will … he pitched great tonight,” Hendersonville head coach Mike Hendrix said. “It was a big environment. I’m glad he’s on my team and pitched for me tonight. I’m glad he’s pitching for Hendersonville High School … and (Zazzaro) did a great job for them.”

HHS UPSET BY GALLATIN IN SECOND ROUND OF DISTRICT TOURAMENT 1-0
Green Wave upset Hendersonville
Gallatin baseball team moves to within one win of earning a regional berth
HENDERSONVILLE Junior Austin McWhirter and senior Billy Campbell combined on a four-hit shutout as the Gallatin High School baseball team captured a 1-0 victory over Hendersonville on Saturday afternoon at Drakes Creek Park.
The Green Wave (18-9) snapped a seven-game losing streak against Hendersonville, the defending District 9-AAA Tournament champion.
The Commandos (23-6) fell into the loser’s bracket and will play an elimination game against the winner of Saturday night’s Wilson Central/Station Camp contest on Monday afternoon. Gallatin will face the winner of Monday’s afternoon’s elimination game on Monday evening and is now just one win away from earning a berth to the Region 5-AAA Tournament.
McWhirter (3-4) pitched into the fifth inning, allowing three hits over 4 and 1/3 innings.
Campbell came on in relief and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, allowing just one hit over 2 and 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two hitters, earning a save for the second consecutive day (his fourth of the season).
The game’s lone run scored in the fifth inning. Junior Jordan Mason drew a one-out walk, moved to third when classmate Andy Denning singled on a hit-and-run play and scored on senior James Rockwell’s successful squeeze bunt.
The two teams combined for nine hits. Senior Carlos Hernandez had two of the Wave’s five hits.
Commando senior Grant Williams (3-1) went the distance on the mound, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out four hitters.
HHS DEFEATS GOODPASTURE ON SENIOR NIGHT
The Commandos ended their regular season by celebrating senior night and with a win over the Goodpasture Cougars 8-6.
HHS used six different pitchers in the win staring with Senior Grant Williams who picked up his third win of the year and ending with his brother Harrison who pitched the seventh inning. Seniors Brandon Fuller, Drew Ferguson and Ian MacMaster also got innings on the mound in the win as well as Freshman Cameron Hansen.
Brett Coker led off the game with a triple and also had a double and an RBI. Brandon Fuller had two hits and drove in two runs. The back and forth contest never saw the Commandos trail.
HHS ends the regular season with a record of 22-5 and will host the District 9AAA Tournament at Drakes Creek Park beginning with a 7:00 game vs Station Camp at 7:00 on Friday night.
