The Barrie Red Sox congratulate last year's OBA Rookie Ball finalist, the Cambridge Cubs, who this season defeated the Oakville A's in the finals of the Ontario "AAA" championships. In "AA" action the Mississauga North Bengal's came from behind in the bottom of the 7th to defeat the Markham Mariners 8-7 and win the Ontario "AA" championship. Mississauga bounced Barrie earlier in the day in the tournament semifinal 12-4 bringing the Red Sox 2003 season to a close.
YSBA has made changes to "Import Classifications". Basically, an "Import" is a player who resides outside the geographic boundaries of a Local Association who, for whatever reason, decides to play in another Local Association. "Import" quotas have been established to, for the most part, limit player movement and establish the maximum number of players who can play on a team from outside the geographic area. The maximum number of players that can play on a given rep team from outside the Local Association's boundries are as follows:
Rookie & Mosquito - 2
Peewee - 3
Bantam - 4
Midget - 5
Junior Unlimited
All players playing for a "Local Association" outside of their residencey area require a "Release" from the Local Association within which they reside.
This decision makes it difficult for a player from the areas surrounding the BMBA (i.e., Orillia, Angus, Alliston, Stayner, etc) to be able to play ball at a higher level. Previously the "Import" rules made it easier for a player to move to an Association that offered the opportunity to play ball at a higher level.
