Clear Lake Falcon Boys Basketball Booster Club Minutes

September 13, 2010

Krueger Field House Gym- Clear Lake High School

Present

Coach Penders, Coach Frye, Don Wilkerson
Booster Club Officers
approximately 31 parents

Agenda

  • Tip-off meeting to discuss the Booster Club Membership
  • Discuss upcoming events and dates
  • Discuss what is expected from the players and misc. items

First agenda item.  Terry Krenek- President, welcomed everyone and asked them to sign in because he needs contact information for the parents.  He had a contact form for the parents to complete, as well as the booster club membership form. He turned the floor over to Coach Penders who encouraged everyone to join the Booster Club which meets the 2nd Monday of each month.  He talked about all the fundraising that made it possible to provide the meals for the boys after the games and allows the Varsity to go to out of town tournament trips, as well as many other things for all the teams.  He tries to keep as many kids involved in the basketball program as he can, and in turn, he needs the parents help in volunteering with events, and especially with concessions. One parent asked if younger kids that need service hours could work the concessions, and the Coach replied that is a possibility, but they will leave that to discretion of whoever takes over concessions, and the members of booster club to decide, but it is allowed as long as an adult is working also.

Second agenda item.
Coach Penders discussed the upcoming events, such as the CCISD Shootout for JV & Varsity on Oct 9, 2010 (to be held at another school, but WE will be hosting the big CCISD Varsity tournament at a later date)  All the district events require the different schools to work the concessions and then split the earnings equally.  The following weekend, Oct 16, 2010 is the 3 on 3 tournament fundraiser.  It is for various age groups beginning with 3rd grade on up.  We had a good turnout last year and will again need parents to volunteer to monitor the games and work the concessions.  Entry forms and information is on our website.

Don Wilkerson, who is not a booster club member but is a very active fan and long time supporter of Clear Lake Boys basketball, introduced himself and let everyone know the website: ClearLakeFalconHoops.Com  which provides schedules, directions to other schools, articles on district games, and stats for the games, etc.  This is the 10th year for the website, and for the past 5 years he has had someone who regularly takes photos of the Varsity games, and he asked for a volunteer to do that this year. Someone else pointed out that it is the #1 school-specific basketball website in the state of Texas.

Among the questions asked by the parents:  One parent asked when tryouts are for those coming from football?  Coach Penders responded they will be the day after their last football game, so that should be Nov. 6th.  Another asked when the game days are? They are on Tuesdays and Fridays for all team levels.  There was also a question about games or tournaments during the Christmas break, and the Coaches replied with some of the dates for those including the Varsity trip to Dallas, and other games for the other teams between Christmas and New Years.  The coaches also advised that the first District games begin on December 19th or 20th.  The Coaches also discussed after school practice times during the season, which begin during the week just after the 3 on 3 tournament weekend.

Additional items.
Coach Penders talked about some of the things that will be expected of the kids.  He said they have been working hard to develop toughness in the players including an after school, outdoor conditioning program that Varsity is participating in, as well as some from the other teams.  Coach said any of the kids can participate.  I believe the cost was $50 for a certain amount of weeks of training (approx 6 weeks I recall), and it is on Mon. and Wed. from 4:30 – 5:15PM.

The Coaches are also requiring that the team members attend tutorials every Tuesday after school.  They can all find a class they could use extra instruction in, regardless of their grades.  Coach Frye also pointed out the benefit of the students getting to know the teachers better, which can also have positive benefits for their association with the basketball program. Another parent mentioned that he heard that elective courses have caused grade problems for some of the players in the past and wanted the other parents to be aware that it isn’t just the core courses that matter.  Coach agreed that some of the electives are really difficult and parents need to buckle down on the kids about all of the classes.

Coach Penders also said he is very approachable and encouraged the kids to talk to him if they need to discuss something. Coach also asked that the parents of the players try to sit together at the games because it makes a difference to the team. He also let parents know that if a player is injured they should see the trainer first because they are very qualified to deal with injuries of the players.  He also mentioned having a meeting at a future date to pass out the uniforms.
Coach also talked about the upcoming chocolate sale, or buyout option, and also mentioned the importance of getting sponsorships this year, (a form was provided with the information).  Terry Krenek advised of raffle tickets that will be sold during the 3 on 3 tourney to raise additional money.  He also brought up the Kroger neighbor to neighbor program which can also raise money for the program, and passed out fliers for it.
There was no tentative agenda for the next meeting discussed. email Sally Sugarek at sssugarek@sbcglobal.net with additions or corrections to these minutes.
