Changes To The Website - October 2011

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Oct 11, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Commentary articles on games will be discontinued. Basic game results showing individual scoring and team score by quarter will be provided.

Comments on the STATS

Initially (ten years ago) my desire to honor the boys and to be fair to them compelled me to provide timely, accurate stats.

Recording of the individual player stats during each game is a very labor intensive effort which greatly distracts from enjoying the game. An inordinate amount of time is invested for this effort to assure accuracy of the numbers.  In addition, there is a high degree of duplication of effort between my statistician's effort and my effort, and the stats collected by the team's student stat recorder. Consequently, the individual player stats will not longer be collected for this website.

Individual stats for the varsity, submitted by the coaches, can be found on maxpreps.com.

Although I do not claim 100% accuracy, in my opinion my stats overall have been more accurate than the team'stats over time. Many reviews of game videos to resolve differences have confirmed that for me.

The reason is simple.
- My stats are the result of two veteran adult pairs of eyes: mine and a focused stat recorder with a decade of experience recording the stats. In addition, I video record every game partly for the purpose of resolving any questions which arise regarding the stats. Not all videos are reviewed to verify my stats but it did happen when more than minor differences occur.
- The team's stats are recorderd by a student usually with no prior experience newly trained to record the stats. The team's stats are reviewed and sometimes changed as a result of the game videos being reviewed by the coaches.

In addition, even though one would not think so, stats seem be somewhat subject to interpretation. Different high school coaches record some stats differently especially when it comes to assists, rebounds, and shots taken. One would expect it to be universally agreed upon but it is not. I have tried to align my definitions of each stat with Coach Penders' definition.

There is a high degree of duplication of effort between my statistician's effort and  my effort, and the stats collected by the team's student stat recorder (the coach reports the team's stats on maxpreps.com).

In my opinion my stats overall have been more accurate than the team's and my desire to honor the boys and be fair compels me to provide the stats. Reviewing the game videos many times to resolve significant differences has confirmed that for me. The reason is simple. My stats are the result of two veteran pairs of eyes: mine and a stat recorder with a decade of experience recording the stats. Prior Comments on the stats. The stats will sometimes be slow in coming to the web site. This is due to the logistics of the process and time constraints, not any lack of importance that I place on the numbers. If the stats are wrong, it is nothing personal or intentional (For a description of the process used to gather the stats. See SITE USAGE HINTS, Varsity Player Stats from the menu). If a player does not get mentioned as much as he or his relatives feel he deserves in the game write-ups, it is probably because I am not aware of something that deserves mention or because I was tired and sleepy when I entered my recollections of the game. I will diligently try to be as fair and equitable as I possibly can in everything I post on this site. What is most worthy of mention is certainly subjective but there will most assuredly be times when I omit something that should have been acknowledged. I apologize for this. A timely email from someone may help correct my oversites. A verbal reprimand by an overzealous parent will have little effect but I appreciate the interest.

The general guidelines I regard as deserving comment include: obvious acts of integrity by a player or the team, outstanding plays, outstanding effort, scoring more than 9 points, more than 4 rebounds, 4 or more assists or steals, and more than 3 blocked shots. I make no guarantees that I will not overlook something that deserves mention however.

The fact of the matter is, in basketball, some things deserve mention more than others though. I am eager to mention anything positive about our players and our team with the understanding that I already spend too much time doing this.

To play 5A basketball in Texas today, these boys must be prudent enough, mature enough, and tough enough to endure any minor criticism of their performance as a team that they might get from this web site. I hope the parents and the fan base are too. After all, isn’t basketball truly one of the games that helps the player learn about life and how to deal with it?

Minutes provided by Betty Squyers

Coach Penders welcomed everyone to the meeting.  He stated this is the 3rd year of the Booster Club and that they have been very helpful.  All school budgets have been cut so we will need to raise more money.  Our Booster Club has always raised more than any other CCISD school.

The CCISD Shootout tournament will be on 09/24/11 at Clear Creek High School. We  will have to provide drinks and concession workers 1:30-5:30pm.  Varsity and JV pre-season games will be coached by Don Wilkerson and Tim Glover.

Coach Penders said his door is always open for the players to come and talk to him or any of the other coaches.  You can email or text him if you have any questions.  All players should attend open gym.

Benjetta West welcomed everyone to the meeting.  Judy Arrington gave the treasurer's report and thanked Don Wilkerson and his wife for doing the audit and getting everything arranged.

Benjetta discussed the “Meet the Coaches” social event that will take place on TBD date at Double Daves.  We will have a Car Wash, on Saturday, date TBD.  We will have several locations and will split the players up at the locations.

Kate Skol discussed Sponsorship, Membership and Volunteer forms.  Everyone will be required to work 2 shifts at the concession stand.   We are looking for someone to Chair the Concession Stand.  Lisa Dillon asked if we had a signup sheet and we do not yet.  Judy asked if we had a deadline for Sponsors. We will let everyone know at the next meeting.

Benjetta talked about the clearlakefalconhoops.com 3 on 3 tournament on 10/22. This is a very good fundraiser for us.  The Flyer has been sent to CCISD for approval.

Judy will order 1” bracelets with “Lake Win Games” to sell as a fund raiser.  Coach Penders suggested we also sell T-shirts.  Merita Parker will look into shirts and yard signs.  Lisa Dillon suggested we tell everyone to sign up for the Kroger card.  They will donate to our program.

Don Wilkerson introduced himself and explained his role with program.  He also gave out the website address, www.clearlakefalconhoops.com

Benjetta announced a varsity tournament is set for 10/1-10/2, we have no details yet.  She reminded everyone we have a meeting the 2nd Monday of each month.

Meeting adjourned at 7:12pm

August 2011 Meeting Minutes

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Aug 9, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Clear Lake High School

Boys Basketball Booster Club Meeting Minutes

Tuesday, 08/09/11

In attendance were

the 2011-12 Officers:

Benjetta West – President

Kate Skol – Vice President

Judy Arrington – Treasurer

Betty Squyres – Secretary

and

6 Parents and Don Wilkerson

Agenda
Introduction: New Board
Goals for School Year
Fish Camp
Tumbler Cups
Wrist band “LAKE -  Win Games”
Booster Club Membership Fee
Fundraisers

Benjetta welcomed everyone and introduced the new Board.  She apologized to Don for not being on the email distribution list.

Item 1:
Betty Squyres will sell Lake tumblers at Fish camp on Thursday, 08/11/11 for $10 each.  We have sold 22, 78 in inventory and 100 more on order.  We will sell the tumblers at the basketball concession stand during the season.  Discussed if you buy a tumbler at the concession stand you get one free drink.

Judy Arrington is going to check into wrist bands with “Lake Win Games” (Pender’s Motto) to sell.  Need Coach Penders to find out if we can sell basketball merchandise at other school events.  We will sell basketball merchandise at all basketball events.

Item 2: Booster Club Membership Fee

Benjetta suggested that we break down the membership fee for two parent household ($50) and single parent household ($30).
Kate Skol suggested that we offer an incentive to join the Booster Club. Maybe put members’ names in home game programs.
Judy Arrington suggested a banner with members’ names be placed somewhere in the field house.

Sherri Jones said the football booster club gives a $10 coupon for football merchandise for joining.

Item 3: Fundraisers

Benjetta said she would like to have a car wash maybe twice a month for all the boys to participate.  We will have a “Meet the Coaches” Booster Club meeting and social maybe at Double Daves.  We will sell our merchandise and promote joining the Booster Club.

Benjetta said we need to form a “Sponsorship Committee” to develop the guidelines for different levels of sponsorship and incentives.

Kate Skol suggested we acknowledge them in the program. Don Wilkerson said he would have to increase the number of pages in the home game programs but that was not a problem.

Don said in the past the Booster Club considered a “media guide type book” with color containing all team pictures and individual pictures of the varsity players.  It will be a lot of work selling the advertising and we will need someone to compose all the content to make it print-ready. We would have to sell it for $15-$20. Terry Krenek mentioned it would be primarily the parents who would buy them.

Additional Items:

Judy Arrington said after football games the players would gather at someone’s house for celebration.  Suggest that basketball may want to do something like that.

Don Wilkerson said they use to have a Thursday “Steak Night” for the Varsity players.  Each player would bring a steak to the host family’s house and a parent would grill the steaks and provide a side for the boys.

Judy Arrington needs the minutes for the final 2010-2011 meeting to set up a bank account.  Terry Krenek will send them via email to Benjetta West and Don Wilkerson.  Benjetta will sign them and forward to Judy.

Clearlakefalconhoops.com will host a 3 on 3 tournament in October or November. The proceeds will go to the Booster Club. The one day tournament is for all age groups and we will have concessions. In the past the cost is $25 per player or $75 per team (maximum of 4 players per team). We raised around $2000 in 2009 and $1600 in 2010. Benjetta will talk to Coach Penders to schedule the tournament. Don suggested the parents need to determine what other events are planned for the weekends so we can minimize the conflict between competing events. A flyer will need to be sent to CCISD for approval before the flyers can be distributed to the coaches at the intermediate and elementary schools.

Concession Volunteer needed.  Anyone interested should contact Benjetta.

Judy Arrington suggested we organize a committee to increase attendance at the games. Suggestions included: schedule dance teams, etc to perform during half time.  Have some type of half time game or gimmick to get fans to participate.

Kate Skol suggested we have a Lake Boys Basketball Facebook page.  Don Wilkerson said we did. Don will provide the address of the page.

Don Wilkerson suggested the Booster Club should consider working the football game Concession Stand and receive $600 but we have to sign up right away and we would need a lot of volunteer parents to man the concessions.  Benjetta will check with Coach Penders.

Don Wilkerson reported the Audit Report for 2010-2011 is complete and was mailed today (08/09/11) to the school district.  Judy Arrington has a copy.

Benjetta ask that if anyone had suggestions to email them to her.  She thanked everyone for attending.

Adjourned at 7:35.
