Clear Lake 63 - Alief Taylor 68
The 2016-17 basketball season drew to a close tonight when Clear Lake was defeated in the first round of the playoffs by a very tough Alief Taylor squad. Taylor led by as much as 15 in the third quarter but Lake closed the gap to pull ahead with 16 seconds gone in the final quarter. The lead changed multiple times in the 4th period.
Junior Ajare Sanni had 29 points on 7 of 30 shooting from the field. He was a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line. Ajare fell 2 points short of breaking the CLHS single season scoring record (888 pts.) set by Richard Law in 2002. Zaid Harris had 14.
Although a young team with only two seniors seeing much action, this was a special team and this was a special season. With their second leading scorer and rebounder (Jeremiah Maldonado) out for the season with a knee injury, several players stepped up to clinch victories in close games, of which there were many. Of the 9 Lake losses this season the average deficit was 3.7 points. No team defeated Lake by more than 5 points.
