Clear Lake 69 - Alvin 40

 Clear Lake 69 – Alvin 40

From the outset there was little doubt about the outcome of the Friday night game between the Alvin Yellowjackets and the Clear Lake Falcons in the Alvin gym. The highly ranked Falcons (now 22-5) made it evident early, by pulling out to an 8-0 lead, that the Jackets (now 5-16) were in for a long night. Clear Lake doubled Alvin’s score 26-13 by halftime and cruised to a 29 point victory 69-40. Junior Kyle Ashton led all scorers by having the best night of his high school career with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals.

The other star of the game was Alvin’s #42, a senior guard who is a special programs boy who is a member of the Alvin varsity team this year. With just over one minute remaining in the game and defeat unavoidable, Coach Eric Aaron, a former Clear Lake coach, called time out to allow the substitution of his special player. The coach directed his player to position himself at the top of the three point arc and remain there which #42 dutifully did. Alvin in-bounded the ball and by the third pass #42 had possession while the Clear Lake squad on the floor stood in position with no intention of preventing the three point attempt. The first shot went up but barely missed as the Jackets rebounded uncontested by the Falcons. The ball went back to #42 for a second attempt which he quickly sank like a pro. Many in the crowd on both sides of the gym rose to their feet and loudly cheered the success of this young man from Alvin, Texas.

Clear Lake High School is one of a couple of dozen widely known large schools where the tradition of their basketball program is legendary statewide. In the basketball community at large there are many widely accepted generalities about Clear Lake varsity basketball teams. Included among those are:

-  Clear Lake will always have a good team;

- they will play team basketball;

- they will be very well coached;

- they will probably be tough to beat;

- they will not play dirty basketball;

-they are guided and influenced by coaches with honesty and integrity and it shows;

-they will usually treat their opponents with respect and expect to be treated the same;

- they will usually have enough class that it will shine through.

If you doubt this ask several senior basketball officials from the Houston area and you will easily confirm this. Go to the state tournament in Austin and seek out people who have been into high school basketball for decades and you will confirm this. Not from all of them but from very many. My point is this is not just one biased opinion from one very biased person.

Many people left the Alvin gym tonight with a warm feeling in their heart not just because of a win but because of one very special boy putting a ball through a hoop. The crowd watched as the Clear Lake team stood motionless hoping for their opponent to score a basket before the clock expired. That’s CLASS and it is the kind of class that makes one proud to be a Clear Lake fan. Winning is important but it isn’t everything. There are few on-the-court opportunities for teenage age boys to show real compassion for another human being. Tonight was one of those rare opportunities and it is something that will be remembered for a long time.
