Galveston Ball 65 - Clear Lake 55

Galveston Ball 65 – Clear Lake 55

The Falcons suffered their first double digit loss in Krueger Field House tonight when they fell to the Galveston Ball High Tors in a critical first round District 24-5A match-up to decide the district lead. Lake started out slowly as they are sometimes prone to do. You cannot spot a talent laden team with a very good coach 10 points in the first quarter and expect to win very often. With their quickness the Tors dominated every aspect of the game in the first quarter and it soon began to look like it might be a runaway before the Falcons finally started to get on track.  By the end of the first quarter after being down by 13 the Falcons narrowed the gap to escape with only a ten point deficit. Considering how easily the Tors were scoring it was amazing that the Falcons were only down by ten.

In the second quarter the Falcons started getting it together but the Tors continued to control the game. Galveston’s guard #3 Larry Durand is listed as 5’8” in the program but he sure seemed much bigger as he out jumped his opponents. It seemed like he got ten offensive rebounds in the first half although it was probably closer to five. He shot the ball nine times in the first half but only three found their mark (Durand had a game high 19 points and was a perfect 4 for 4 in the fourth quarter). Clear Lake’s Steve Hartman also shot the ball nine times in the first half while six of his attempts went in as he kept Lake in the game almost single handedly. Only two other Lake shots from the field found their mark in the first half. Hartman led the Falcons with a varsity career high 18 points (14 in the first half).

After a halftime talk, in typical Lake fashion the Falcons came out and scored four unanswered baskets at the start of the second half to announce they were not ready to concede. With the gap narrowed to two points, the Lake crowd’s hopes quickly rose as the Falcons made it much tougher for the Tors to score but Clear Lake could not stop the Tors from scoring. Clear Lake’s final basket of the quarter, one by Cody (his third in the quarter) made it 41-44 before Ball High racked up another six points to put Ball up by nine at the end of three.

In the final quarter the Falcons worked hard to narrow the gap but the Tors widened it to 12, 48-60. With just over 2:20 remaining in the game baskets by Andrew and Brian cut the lead to six 54-60 but the Tors would not be denied despite some superb defense from the Falcons at times.

Clear Lake trailed the entire game and was behind as much as 13 points. In the fourth quarter the Falcons made only 1 of 4 free throws, and made only one outside shot on 6 of 18 shooting from the field. Due primarily to Ball’s quickness, Lake made only 1 of 9 three point attempts in the fourth quarter.

For only the third time since the opening of Krueger Field House, Clear Lake lost a home game. Ball came to Lake’s house and triumphed in an exciting basketball game which put the Tors in the lead for the district crown. Assuming decent officiating, Clear Lake can beat Ball in their house with only a couple of slight improvements on defense, just a bit better shooting from outside, and a minor improvement in free throw shooting.  Lake will be up for Ball when they next meet and it will be a great game well worth the drive down to the island. That is, if the Falcons do not start out slow and spot the Tors 10 points in the first quarter.
