Galveston Ball 58 - Clear Lake 55

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Apr 25, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Galveston Ball 58 – Clear Lake 55

It was an exciting game with the lead changing six times and Clear Lake leading most of the game. Clear Lake led the entire first quarter except when the game was tied at 8. At the end of the quarter a Lake foul, then a Lake technical foul gave Galveston Ball 4 points off free throws plus the ball to put Ball ahead to close the quarter.

In the second quarter Clear Lake retook the lead on outside shooting and moved ahead 20-29 thanks to Jacob Horton who had a standout performance in the quarter scoring 14 straight points off 5 for 5 shooting from the field plus a free throw. Jacob increased the Falcons lead to 10, 22-32, with 2:38 remaining in the first half. At the half it was 29-34, Lake by 5.

In the third quarter another of the game's eight ties occurred, this time at 41 with 1:56 remaining. At 1:25 Galveston went ahead on a layup by slasher Larry Durand (#3). The quickness of the Ball guards caused the same consternation for Lake as they did in the first round game against the Tors. Ball's Durand finished with a game high 23 points going 7 of 13 from the field and 8 of 8 from the line. The third quarter closed with Ball up 43-41 off Durand’s basket.

In the final quarter the score was tied again at 45 and at 47 before Ball went ahead 51-49 with six minutes remaining. At the 2:52 mark the score was still unchanged but Lake retook the lead 51-52 at the 2:40 mark. After a tie at 52, Ball regained the lead 55-52 with 1:45 remaining in the contest. Another free throw by the Tors made it 56-52 with 58 seconds showing on the old scoreboard clock. With 27 seconds remaining a three pointer by Jason Hollis, his second of the game, made it 56-55 before two free throws put Ball up 58-55. In the waning seconds of the game, the Falcons had three consecutive missed opportunities but could not close. The final score was 58-55.

When a team scores almost five times as many points off free throws as you do, you are usually not going to win. Clear Lake made 5 of 10 free throws in the game. Galveston Ball made 11 of 14 in the first half and 24 of 34 for the night (and only one Lake foul was a final desperation foul).

The officiating could have been much worse but also could have been better. The officiating was not why Clear Lake lost.

As expected, the Falcons certainly played noticeably better team basketball than the Tors but could not overcome the deficit caused by the imbalance in free throw scoring. The Falcons' season-long pattern of committing too many fouls continued to plague the squad and it really stood out in this outing because there were just too many really dumb Clear Lake fouls throughout the game.

The Lake defense was often unable to stop the guard penetration by the Tors and Galveston is one of the better rebounding teams Lake has faced this season. Overall it was an excellent basketball game that appeared headed for an upset throughout much of the game.

The Falcons face 23-5A runner-up Hightower Tuesday at Phillips Field House.

2005 Banquet Ends Season

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Mar 24, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The 2005 Clear Lake High School Basketball Banquet was held Thursday evening, March 24, at the Johnson Space Center Gilruth Center in the Alamo Ballroom. The parents of the varsity players, in devotion to their player sons, provided some video highlights and had the banquet hall very festively decorated in honor of the successes of the 2004-2005 varsity team (check out the bags holding the balloons in the photos in the ALBUMS Section).

The evening consisted of dinner, recognition of the many people who contributed to the success of the basketball program, season reviews and team recognition for all five teams by the respective coaches, and the awards announcements for Falcon Hall OF Fame 2005 Inductee, George Wang Hustle Award, and Varsity MVP award. As an added bonus, the seniors were honored by fathers Gene Pearce and Steve Oswald. Gene presented an impressive, in-depth numerical comparison of the seniors' scoring and won/loss stats for their entire high school career (and some going back to the seventh grade). Former astronaut Steve Oswald reviewed some accomplishments and the future plans of the seniors.

VIP's in attendance included Superintendent Dr. Sandra Mossman, Principal Linda Rawlings, coaching legend Bill Krueger, and Hall of Famers Jim Saxe, Jim Williams, and Leo Sarabia.

Former Clear Lake Varsity coach Bill Krueger introduced former Falcon George Wang as the 2005 Hall of Fame inductee. George provided a brief motivational speech to the players and parents on the attributes derived from playing basketball and their value as you proceed through life. George is the player after whom the annual Hustle Award is named. Former coach Jim Saxe, last year's Hall of Fame inductee, originated the award and has provided scholarship money to the George Wang Hustle Award winner since 1978 (Coach Saxe owns and operates the Clear Lake Putt Putt Golf Course on NASA Road 1). This year David Pearce received the George Wang Hustle Award (presented by varsity coach Lynn McDonald), and co-captain Gordon Abner was chosen by his teammates as the team MVP. imageimage

Clear Lake 67 - Clear Brook 44

Clear Lake 67 – Clear Brook 44
February 15, 2006

History was made tonight in the Clear Lake gym. In what would have been a Tuesday night contest, the Falcons faced the Clear Brook Wolverines on a Wednesday night due to a postponement of Tuesday games in Districts 23 and 24 in honor of Coach Billy Carlisle who passed away last Friday one day before his 52nd birthday. Billy’s memorial service was held Tuesday night at the Deer Park High School Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Billy was the head coach at Deer Park for the last twenty years.  A capacity crowd close to 2,000 was there to pay their respects to the man. Billy played in the first game in Clear Lake’s gym in 1972, was the school’s first basketball MVP, was all-district, and was in the first graduating class from Clear Lake High School. A college fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank for the Carlisle’s three sons  who have all been seen many times in area gyms since infancy. The legacy of Billy Carlisle will live on.

I first met Billy Carlisle when he was in the seventh grade. In a tournament game between Friendswood, the team I was there to support, and Seabrook Intermediate, Billy was a standout player. I had never seen a kid that good at that age. The fact that I remember that particular game so well indicates what a great player he was. He later became a fine man and a role model for helping our youth.  I never knew Billy very well except in the gym around young people. Other than his intensity during the game, what stood out to me was how respectful he was to people of all ages. The world needs more Billy Carlisles.

In addition to playing a district game on Wednesday instead of Tuesday, this was the last varsity game to be played in the Clear Lake gym. The Falcons will play next year in the new Bill Krueger Field House which is scheduled to be completed prior to the start of next season. Hopefully, the days of a poorly lighted gym with one of the worst public address systems of any 5A school in the state are behind us.

The night was also Fan Appreciation Night and Seniors Night when the parents of the seniors are honored (pictures of the parents with their senior sons are posted in the Albums section).

Clear Lake was not supposed to make it to the playoffs this season for the first time in recent memory so the Falcons came in second in the district to quiet the doubtful. With one game remaining against Galveston Ball High on Friday night, Lake clinched a second place berth with the defeat over Clear Brook. Ball High will take the third spot in the district playoffs. Friday's game at Ball High should be a good one. With the start of Mardi Gras on the island, it would be wise to come early to the game because of the traffic.

After trailing briefly in the first quarter the Falcons took the lead and never relinquished it. Lake led by as much as 25 due in part to an 11 point first quarter by Kendrell Thompson and a 17 point second quarter by Justin Kurtz. Thompson had 21 for the night and Kurtz had 27 according to my stats.

The Falcons went out in style in the old gym as they shot 50% from the field and 72% from the free throw line. Justin Kurtz hit 6 of 8 from three point land on his way to scoring a game-high 27 points. Before the game was over the boys were having some fun with dunks, behind the back passes, uncontested fast breaks, and sparkling defense as they outshone their opponents from across the freeway. Impressive support off the bench by Fulton Brisco, Andy Leveque,  Christian Enriquez, and especially Ross Maha made the Lake fans grin too (Ross blocked 3 shots).

It is always a good feeling to finish the last home game of the season with a win. Tonight the memory of Clear Lake’s first game in the gym, won in part due to the outstanding zeal and intensity of a bushy haired, red headed kid named Billy Carlisle, made tonight’s final win in the old gym just a little bit sweeter. Billy’s dad, George Carlisle, was the school’s principal and Billy’s coach was a fella named Bill Krueger. The gym may be dimly lit but the bright glow which emanates from it due to all the outstanding Clear Lake basketball players and coaches who have practiced and competed there will endure long after the lights in the new gym are extinguished.

Individual Scoring:
Justin Kurtz 27 (6 of 8 from three point range), Kendrell Thompson 21,
RJ Turner 6, Andy Leveque 5, Armie Lewis 4, Ross Maha 2, Fulton Brisco 2, Jimmy Witten (7 rebounds, 4 assists)

Turnovers: 19
