2008-09 Rules Changes

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Jul 27, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

  2008-09 NFHS Basketball Rules Changes

3-5-3Any item that goes around the entire head (elastic strips/bands, pre-wrap, headbands, etc.) shall meet the rule requirements regarding color, maximum size, logo restrictions and team uniformity. Black and beige have also been added to the colors a team is permitted to wear.

Rationale: This change makes the rule more consistent in application and enforcement. The additional colors will provide student-athletes with the same low-cost options, while maintaining team uniformity.

8-1-4b, c, dDuring a free throw, all players will move up one marked lane space, leaving the two spaces closest to the end line vacant. A new mark (2 inches by 8 inches) must be reapplied to the lane line near the free-throw line to designate the last 3-foot marked lane space.

Rationale: This rules change may reduce rough play during free-throw situations while maintaining defensive rebounding percentages within an acceptable range.

10-5-5 NEWA maximum of one technical foul shall be charged directly to the head coach when a participant wears an illegal jersey, illegal pants/skirt or an illegal number.

Rationale: This rules change reduces the penalty from one technical foul assessed to each starter and each substitute to a maximum of one technical foul assessed directly to the head coach. There has been a proliferation of illegal uniforms worn by teams within the last several years. This change reduces the penalty, but puts the responsibility for illegal uniforms where it ultimately belongs– with the head coach – not the participant.

2008-09 NFHS Basketball Editorial Changes

3-4The uniform section will be reorganized to separate the topics by articles and adjust the language to reflect current industry standards/terminology.

4-27-2A portion of the first sentence of the ‘incidental contact’ definition will be removed to clarify that a foul should be called when displacement occurs while opponents attempt to secure a loose ball.

4-42-5The article will be reorganized into sub-articles for clarity.

10-5The section will be reorganized for better understanding and clarity.

2008-09 Points of Emphasis

1. Legal Uniforms

2. Rough Play

3. Time-outs

4. Slapping the Backboard

5. Officials’ Mechanics and Signals

Photos will usually feature only Varsity games but exceptions have been made. Photos will appear in two places:

1. Embedded in the Falconhoops website pages:

The Welcome Page, the Falcon Flashes Pages, and a few other webpages like the Roster and Tournament Pages. This will usually be fewer than two dozen each week during the season. In some cases these photos might be altered from the originals to enhance their viewing.

2. On the ALBUMS photo website ("picasaweb sites")

Organized by game with the most recent game first, almost all of the photos provided to me or taken by me will appear here usually one album per game. Albums are also separated by photographer so if more than one album per game appears more than one person provided photos for that game.

Every photo appearing on the website or in the current season albums is maintained in the archive after the completion of each season. The photos are arranged by season  and game or event within that season with the most recent season first.

Any photograph provided to the website becomes public domain. Very large photos (large file size) will sometimes be reduced in size when uploaded to the ALBUMS.

Please note: Photos from several seasons back are being  migrated from the old Falconhoops Albums but that effort has not been completed.

 CAPTURING SELECTED PHOTOS

For those who might want to view, capture, and print some of the many photos which have been provided on the web site.

1. CURRENT SEASON PHOTOS NAVIGATION

a. If no photos exist on the Falconhoops website, click here for ALBUMS .

b. Preferred technique: From the Falconhoops website, linking to the Albums photos website (picasa website) is best accomplished by double clicking on any photo appearing on the falconhoops website (or with just a single click on the Game Write-up Headline in FALCON FLASHES ).  Once you arrive at the photo website, simply choose the album (or game) you are interested in by clicking on it. Game photos will appear with the most recent game first.

Your options will be:
1. view or download individual photos
2. view a slideshow of all pictures in an album
3. download an entire album
4. order prints of selected photos directly.
5. search all albums for photos of a specific player.

(No revenue from ordering prints is received by this web site).

c. Links to ALBUMS can also be found on the USEFUL LINKS page.

2. ARCHIVED PHOTOS FROM PREVIOUS SEASONS
To go to the Permanent Archives link, click here < Photo Archive Link

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I search the album of the most recent game for a specific player?

Usually not. Adding the captions to most of the photos is very time consuming and is often not completed for several weeks after the album is created. My goal is to have them all captioned before the end of the season though.

Why are there two albums for some games?

Usually because more than one photographer provided photos for a game. In that case, you might see multiple albums for the same game on the Current Season Albums site.

In some seasons, why are there two Albums with the same photos for the same game?

When a very large number of photos is provided for a game I sometimes select the better photos, "the highlights" and display only those in a separate album.

Why are the viewable images of the photos so small in the Picasaweb albums?
You can view the individual photos in one of three different sizes by clicking in the top right side of the frame. Using the ALBUMS slideshow for viewing the photos will give the largest view of the pictures.

Searching for a player's photos (this function has been suspended).

You should note that you can also do a search to collect all photos of your favorite player. For example, click in the search box, enter "Adam" (player first name) in the search box, click on “Search” and all of the albums where "Adam" photos appear will be presented along with the album name in which the photo resides.

Videos
Note also the addition of some contributed video clips in a VIDEO album. From time to time videos will be added.
